Description

Van Volxem Gottesfuss GG 2022 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a powerful, dry Saar Riesling from one of Mosel’s most prized steep slate vineyards. This Grosses Gewächs combines depth, minerality and structure, crafted for those who appreciate serious, ageworthy Riesling. Coming from old vines in the historic Gottesfuss site, it reflects both the warmth of the 2022 vintage and the cool precision that has made Saar wines legendary.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Gottesfuss GG shows a bright, pale lemon color with youthful green reflections, hinting at its freshness and energy. The nose is clear and finely etched, leading with smoky, spicy slate notes, citrus zest, white peach and a hint of herbal lift. It’s an aromatic profile that balances ripe Saar Riesling fruit with a distinctive mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is surprisingly dense and almost creamy in texture for a Saar Riesling, a direct reflection of the warm, dry 2022 growing season. Juicy stone fruit, ripe citrus and a touch of pineapple are wrapped in savory slate spice and a firm, well-defined structure. At this early stage it can feel a touch weighty and tightly coiled, but the backbone of acidity and mineral grip suggests considerable improvement with time in bottle. In magnum, its aging potential is even greater—expect 10–15+ years of evolution, developing more complexity, finesse and harmony as it matures.

Production
Gottesfuss is a historic, steep, slate-rich vineyard in the Saar, a cool sub-region of the Mosel renowned for razor-sharp, mineral Rieslings. The old vines (“Alte Reben”) here dig deep into weathered slate soils, yielding naturally low crops with concentrated, terroir-driven fruit. Van Volxem typically harvests by hand on these slopes, carefully selecting only healthy, fully ripe Riesling grapes for their Grosses Gewächs bottlings. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with a focus on transparency and precision, often in stainless steel and large, neutral oak, with extended lees contact to build texture without masking the vineyard character. The result is a dry, site-expressive Riesling that speaks clearly of slate, slope and Saar.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined dishes: think grilled or poached white fish, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or poultry with light cream or citrus-based sauces. It also works well with alpine cheeses, veal schnitzel, and subtly spiced Asian cuisine where freshness and minerality can cut through richness. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to highlight its precision while allowing the texture to unfold. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended, especially for the magnum, to help open the aromatics and soften the structure.

Producer
Van Volxem is one of the leading estates of the Saar, housed in a historic winery in Wiltingen with roots tracing back to the 19th century and beyond, when the region’s Rieslings were among the most prized and expensive wines in Europe. Under modern stewardship, the estate has been revitalized and is now a benchmark for dry, terroir-driven Rieslings from steep slate vineyards. With an impressive collection of top sites, including Gottesfuss, Van Volxem has helped spearhead the renaissance of Saar wines on the international stage, earning consistent acclaim for precision, depth and ageworthiness across its Grosses Gewächs bottlings.
