Description
Van Volxem Bockstein GG 2022 in magnum format captures the tension, purity and pedigree that have made Saar Riesling a cult favorite among wine lovers. From one of the region’s most iconic steep-slope vineyards, this dry Grosses Gewächs combines floral delicacy with a taut, mineral backbone. The Bockstein site has been celebrated since the 19th century for producing especially refined, long-lived Rieslings, and Van Volxem has helped restore its historic reputation at the very top of German wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Bockstein GG shows a pale straw to light lemon hue with brilliant clarity and a faint green shimmer, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is immediately clear, bright and delicately floral, with notes of white blossoms, citrus zest and green apple, wrapped around a core of cool slate minerality. Subtle hints of white peach, lime and fresh herbs emerge with a bit of air.
On the palate, the wine is juicily textured yet finely etched, with a mouthwatering interplay of ripe citrus, orchard fruit and herbal spice. It feels precise and savory rather than opulent, driven by a laser-like acidity that keeps everything in perfect focus. A gently spicy, slightly phenolic grip shows that the wine is still in the latter stages of its élevage evolution, giving a faint bitterness on the finish that will integrate with further bottle age. The length is medium at this early stage, but the structure, balance and extract clearly point to very good aging potential. Expect this magnum to develop beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity, harmony and length as the youthful edges soften.
Production
The Bockstein vineyard sits in the cool Saar valley, a tributary of the Mosel, on steep, south and southwest-facing slopes with weathered Devonian slate soils that are poor, stony and exceptionally well-drained. This harsh, mineral-rich terroir naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor, while the cool climate preserves the electric acidity that defines Saar Riesling. Grapes for the Grosses Gewächs are meticulously harvested by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling clusters are selected. In the cellar, Van Volxem follows a low-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and extended lees contact, often in large traditional oak casks (Fuder), to build texture without masking the vineyard’s character. The wine is vinified fully dry in accordance with VDP.GG standards, allowing the vineyard’s precision and minerality to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This focused, dry Saar Riesling is a superb partner for refined, subtly aromatic dishes. Think delicate seafood such as poached or grilled white fish, scallops, sushi and sashimi, as well as steamed mussels or prawns with citrus and herbs. It also shines with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, ceviche, tartares, goat cheese, and poultry or veal in cream or wine-based sauces where its bright acidity cuts through richness. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to emphasize freshness and minerality; in magnum, a brief decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to help the wine open and smooth out its youthful, slightly bitter edge. As it ages, shorter aeration or simply allowing it to evolve in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Van Volxem is one of the leading estates of the Saar, historically revered for its dry and off-dry Rieslings that once graced top restaurant lists across Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Based in Wiltingen, the estate has been rebuilt into a modern benchmark winery, with a strong focus on steep, slate-grown vineyards such as Scharzhofberger, Goldberg and Bockstein. By combining old vines, meticulous vineyard work and a quality-first, low-intervention approach in the cellar, Van Volxem has played a key role in the renaissance of Saar Riesling. Its Grosses Gewächs bottlings are now regularly cited among the finest dry Rieslings in Germany, underlining the estate’s importance both in the Mosel region and on the international fine wine stage.
