Description

Van Volxem Bockstein GG 2022 is a precise, Saar-born dry Riesling that balances purity, finesse and a quietly powerful structure. Drawn from the steep, historic Bockstein vineyard, this VDP.Grosses Gewächs showcases the crystal-clear, floral side of Mosel-Saar Riesling with an undercurrent of spice and slate-driven minerality. It is a wine for those who appreciate detail, tension and elegance over sheer opulence.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Bockstein GG 2022 is pale straw with green reflections, signalling its youth and brisk freshness. The nose opens clear and lifted, with delicate white flowers, lemon zest, crunchy stone fruit and a hint of green herbs over wet slate and a touch of smoky minerality. On the palate it is juicy, savoury and finely structured, with a mouth-watering, slate-tinged acidity carrying flavours of lime, ripe citrus, white peach and subtle spice. There is a pleasantly herbal, slightly bitter twist on the finish, a sign of its youth and ongoing integration from the long, cool fermentation. Medium in length now, it shows a tensile backbone and a dry, saline aftertaste that promises more complexity with time in bottle. While already enjoyable, it has solid aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining depth, creaminess and tertiary notes of honey, dried herbs and petrol with proper cellaring.

Production
Bockstein is a famed, steep, south- to southwest-facing slate vineyard in the Saar, a cool sub-region of the Mosel known for its razor-sharp, mineral Rieslings. The vines here root deeply into weathered Devonian slate, which lends the wine its clarity, tension and stony precision. Van Volxem typically harvests by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous grape selection on the slope. In the cellar, the Grosses Gewächs Rieslings are usually fermented with natural or gently selected yeasts in stainless steel and/or large traditional oak casks at controlled, cool temperatures, with a long, slow fermentation and extended lees contact to build texture without losing freshness. The 2022 Bockstein GG remains resolutely dry, allowing the vineyard character and slate minerality to stand front and centre.

Food & Serving
This is a superb food wine, especially with refined, subtly aromatic dishes. Try it with grilled or poached white fish, sushi and sashimi, ceviche, or shellfish such as scallops, prawns and crab. It also works beautifully with poultry, veal schnitzel, light pork dishes, asparagus, fresh goat’s cheese and vegetable-focused cuisine with citrus or herb accents. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F). Young bottles can benefit from a brief decant of 30–45 minutes to soften the youthful edges and allow the floral and slatey nuances to fully emerge.

Producer
Van Volxem is one of the leading modern estates of the Saar, housed in a historic winery with roots dating back to the 19th century and earlier. Revived and re-energised in the late 1990s, the estate has been a driving force in returning Saar Riesling to its former glory, focusing on steep, old-vine sites and low-intervention craftsmanship. With holdings in some of the region’s most important vineyards, including Bockstein, Van Volxem has become a benchmark producer for dry, terroir-expressive Rieslings in Germany. Their VDP.Grosses Gewächs bottlings regularly garner top scores and critical acclaim, underscoring the estate’s role as a quality standard-bearer in the Mosel-Saar region.
