Description

Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2022 is a masterfully dry Riesling from one of the Saar’s most storied steep-slope vineyards, crafted from old vines (“Alte Reben”) that deliver remarkable depth and precision. Classified as VDP.Grosses Gewächs, it represents the top tier of German dry Riesling, combining crystalline freshness with serious aging potential. The historic Altenberg site has been prized since the 19th century, when Saar wines were among Europe’s most sought-after whites, and this bottling carries that legacy into a modern, terroir-driven style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Altenberg Alte Reben GG shows a pale, radiant straw-yellow with greenish reflections, hinting at its youthful energy and cool-climate origins. The nose opens with fine, delicate aromas of white peach and nectarine, supported by notes of lime zest, crushed slate, and subtle herbal tones—think lemon balm and a whisper of wild flowers. On the palate, it is precise and refreshing, with a pure, stony backbone and a beautifully integrated, crystal-clear acidity. Juicy stone fruit and citrus are wrapped in a taut, mineral frame, giving the wine both charm and seriousness. The finish is long, dry and slightly gripping, with a gentle, mouthwatering austerity that speaks to its pedigree and youth. Built to evolve, this Grosses Gewächs will gain complexity and texture over the next 8–15 years, developing more spice, smokiness and honeyed nuances while retaining its vibrant core.

Production
The Altenberg vineyard sits on steep, slate-rich slopes along the cool Saar, a tributary of the Mosel, where poor Devonian slate soils and pronounced day–night temperature swings give Riesling its trademark tension and minerality. Old, low-yielding vines dig deep into the rock, concentrating flavor and naturally limiting production. At Van Volxem, the grapes for this GG are typically hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and impeccable fruit selection. After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place with minimal intervention—often with indigenous yeasts and extended time on the lees in stainless steel and/or large neutral fuder casks—preserving the vineyard’s character, enhancing texture and emphasizing a dry, elegant style without overt oak influence.

Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that excels at the table. Pair it with refined seafood dishes such as scallops, turbot, or poached hake, as well as sushi, sashimi or ceviche where its acidity and minerality cut through richness and highlight delicate flavors. It is equally at home with fine poultry, veal in light cream sauces, or modern vegetable-driven cuisine featuring asparagus, fennel or citrus accents. Serve well chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11 °C. A short decant of 30–45 minutes, or simply giving it time to open in the glass, will help the wine reveal its full aromatic complexity and depth.

Producer
Van Volxem is a historic Saar estate based in Wiltingen, with roots reaching back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when its vineyards were already ranked among the most prestigious in Europe. Revitalized in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the winery has become one of the key standard-bearers for dry, terroir-driven Riesling from the Mosel-Saar region. Focusing on steep, slate-laden sites and old vines, Van Volxem has helped re-establish the Saar’s reputation for producing profoundly mineral, age-worthy Rieslings. Its Grosses Gewächs bottlings, like Altenberg Alte Reben, are regularly highlighted by critics and enthusiasts as benchmarks for precision, elegance and authenticity in German wine.
