Description

Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2021 in magnum is a powerful, dry Riesling from one of the Saar’s most revered steep-slope vineyards. Sourced from old vines (“Alte Reben”) on the Kanzemer Altenberg, this Grosses Gewächs bottling combines tropical intensity with razor-sharp precision. In the generous 1.5 L format, it’s built not only for immediate pleasure but also for graceful, long-term cellaring.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a bright, pale lemon hue with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is strikingly expressive: layers of passion fruit, pineapple and ripe mango glide over a core of citrus zest, crushed slate and a faint herbal lift, giving a clear sense of its warm but mineral-rich site. On the palate, the 2021 Altenberg Alte Reben GG is at once juicily inviting and tightly focused. The first impression is pure, flowing fruit—tropical and stone-fruited—wrapped in a crystalline, mouth-watering acidity. Beneath the exuberance lies a firm, linear backbone of minerality, with a salty, slate-driven finish that keeps the wine endlessly refreshing and dry. The magnum format and the structure of the 2021 vintage suggest excellent aging potential: expect 10–20 years of positive development, with the fruit gradually giving way to more complex notes of smoke, honey, herbs and wet stone.

Production
The Kanzemer Altenberg is one of the Saar’s steepest and warmest vineyards, with south and southwest exposures and poor, weathered Devonian slate soils that force the old Riesling vines to root deeply. These “Alte Reben” naturally produce low yields of highly concentrated fruit. Harvest is typically conducted by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and the meticulous selection required for a VDP.Grosses Gewächs. In the cellar, Van Volxem follows a minimally interventionist approach: gentle pressing, slow, cool fermentations—often with ambient yeasts—and extended lees contact in large neutral oak or stainless steel, preserving clarity while adding subtle texture. The result is a dry Riesling that reflects its site with precision and intensity.

Food & Serving
This dry, structured Riesling is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as turbot, sole, scallops or lobster, as well as sushi and sashimi, where its acidity and minerality cut through richness. It also works brilliantly with aromatic cuisine—Thai or Vietnamese dishes with citrus, lemongrass and mild chili heat—as well as roasted poultry, veal in light cream sauces, or goat and semi-soft alpine cheeses. Serve at 9–11°C, slightly cooler if enjoyed as an aperitif and a touch warmer with richer dishes. Young bottles will benefit from 30–60 minutes in a carafe, especially in magnum, to allow the tropical fruit and slate-driven complexity to fully emerge.

Producer
Van Volxem is a historic estate located in Wiltingen on the Saar, a cooler tributary of the Mosel long celebrated for producing some of Germany’s most refined Rieslings. The property’s viticultural roots trace back to Roman times and later to a 19th-century brewery and wine estate owned by the Van Volxem family, whose name the winery still bears. In the late 1990s, Roman Niewodniczanski revitalized the estate, painstakingly restoring old, steep vineyards and championing dry, terroir-focused Rieslings from top sites such as Scharzhofberger, Gottesfuß and Kanzemer Altenberg. Today, Van Volxem is regarded as one of the leading producers in the Saar, known for crafting Grosses Gewächs wines that combine intensity, tension and age-worthiness, helping to redefine the region’s modern reputation on the world stage.
