Description
Valandraud 2014 is a standout Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most talked-about estates, offering the depth and polish expected from a Premier Grand Cru Classé. Known for its modern, meticulous style and small-scale precision, it combines power, elegance and concentration in a way that has made Valandraud a benchmark for the Right Bank.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby to garnet colour with impressive saturation. The nose is generous and layered, often revealing black cherry, plum, cassis, violet, mocha, graphite and subtle spice, with oak lending notes of cedar and vanilla.
On the palate, it is usually full-bodied and structured, with ripe dark fruit, silky tannins and a focused, lingering finish. The 2014 vintage has the balance to evolve gracefully, and while approachable with air now, it should continue to age well for several more years, developing more savoury, truffle-like complexity over time.
Production
Made in Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, Valandraud benefits from the limestone and clay soils typical of the appellation, which help lend freshness, depth and mineral tension to the wines. The estate is known for highly selective harvesting and detailed parcel-by-parcel vinification, with a strong emphasis on low yields and careful extraction to preserve purity and structure.
Food & Serving
Best served with rich dishes such as roast lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, mushroom risotto or game. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if opening young or if you want to soften the tannins and bring out the wine’s aromatic complexity.
Producer
Valandraud was founded by Jean-Luc and Muriel Thunevin and rose to fame as one of Bordeaux’s original garage wine success stories. From a small and ambitious beginning in Saint-Émilion, the estate earned a major reputation for quality and innovation, eventually securing Premier Grand Cru Classé status and becoming one of the most recognisable names in the region.
