Description
Trotanoy 2019 is a commanding, deeply structured red from one of Pomerol’s most revered estates in Bordeaux, France. Known as one of the most powerful wines in the J.P. Moueix portfolio, this vintage combines muscular intensity with an unusual approachability in its youth. It captures the classic gravitas of Trotanoy while showcasing the ripeness and purity that define the outstanding 2019 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2019 is intensely dark and opaque, with a garnet core shading to a deep ruby rim, hinting at its concentration. The nose is layered and complex, opening with ripe black cherry and dark berry compote, followed by cedar, cigar box, and rich baking spices. Underneath, subtle notes of sweet earth, truffle, and a touch of creamy new oak add depth and refinement.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and richly textured wine, with an opulent attack that immediately fills the mouth. Flavors of black plum, kirsch, blackberry, and dark chocolate are wrapped in polished yet abundant tannins, giving the wine both volume and structure. The mid-palate is remarkably concentrated, leading to a long, youthfully firm finish where ripe tannins and mineral-tinged, earthy notes assert themselves. While surprisingly open and expressive for such a young Trotanoy, this 2019 has significant aging potential; it should evolve beautifully over 20–30 years, gaining complexity, silkier texture, and more pronounced tertiary notes of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor.
Production
Trotanoy is situated on one of Pomerol’s great terroirs, a mix of deep clay and gravel that naturally limits yields and produces wines of impressive power and longevity. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot, with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, all tended with meticulous, parcel-by-parcel care and predominantly manual work in the vines. Harvest is carried out by hand, allowing careful selection of perfectly ripe fruit. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to shape the wine’s structure and texture without overwhelming its sense of place. The result is a wine that faithfully reflects Pomerol’s noble clay soils while capturing the richness and purity of the 2019 vintage.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2019 is best matched with rich, refined dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure: think classic roast lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef short ribs, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or game birds with truffle-infused sauces. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gruyère, and earthy preparations featuring mushrooms or black truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decanting is strongly recommended for younger bottles—at least 2–3 hours—to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s layered bouquet to fully emerge.
