Description

Trotanoy 2016 is a powerful, deeply structured Right Bank Bordeaux that showcases the grandeur of Pomerol in a top-rated vintage. Crafted predominantly from Merlot with a dash of Cabernet Franc, it is still youthful and slightly restrained, yet already reveals remarkable depth and precision. This cuvée comes from one of Pomerol’s most revered estates, long celebrated for producing wines of intensity, longevity and almost Burgundian texture.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2016 is an intense, opaque garnet with a deep, almost inky core and a vivid, ruby-tinged rim. The nose opens slowly at this stage, initially a touch reserved, then gradually unfurling layers of chocolate-covered cherries, black raspberries and ripe mulberries. With air, more complex nuances emerge—graphite and pencil shavings, crushed stones, forest floor, a hint of grill smoke and a delicate lift of star anise. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a tightly packed, muscular core of black and red fruits wrapped in a firm, grainy tannin structure. The freshness is striking, giving energy and definition to the dense fruit and driving it through to a very long, mineral-inflected finish. This is a serious, ageworthy Trotanoy with great balance, poised to evolve beautifully over time. Its structure and concentration suggest a long aging potential of 20–30 years or more from vintage, with optimal drinking likely from the early 2030s onward.

Production
Château Trotanoy lies on some of Pomerol’s most prized terroir, a mosaic of clay and gravel soils, including heavy clay that gives the Merlot its trademark power, depth and velvety texture. The 2016 blend is composed of roughly 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, sourced from low-yielding vines that are carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and selection. In the cellar, the grapes are sorted meticulously, then vinified parcel by parcel to respect the nuances of each plot, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine slowly gains complexity, polish and integration without losing its mineral backbone or freshness.

Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2016 is a natural partner for richly flavored, refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef or veal, duck breast, game birds, and truffle-infused risottos or mushroom-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté or a well-matured Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Given its youth and density, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended at this stage to allow the wine to breathe and reveal its full aromatic complexity; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant will suffice mainly to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of the historic and most esteemed estates of Pomerol, with roots stretching back to the 18th century and a reputation for producing profound, long-lived wines. Owned and managed by the Moueix family—key figures in the development and international recognition of Right Bank Bordeaux—Trotanoy is often mentioned in the same breath as the greatest names of the appellation. Its wines are renowned for their combination of power, depth, and sensual texture, frequently showing a distinctive mineral signature from the estate’s exceptional clay-rich soils. Over the decades, Trotanoy has earned a devoted following among collectors and connoisseurs, and vintages like 2016 underline its status as one of the benchmark properties of Pomerol.
