Description
Trotanoy 2015 is a majestic Right Bank Bordeaux from one of Pomerol’s most revered estates, showcasing the purity and power of Merlot in a great vintage. Crafted from 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, it marries opulent dark fruit with remarkable freshness and a deeply mineral backbone. This is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts alike, built to impress today yet with the structure to evolve beautifully over decades. What sets Trotanoy apart is its ability to deliver both voluptuous richness and classical balance, thanks to its exceptional clay- and gravel-rich terroir. The 2015 vintage, already considered a modern benchmark in Bordeaux, highlights the estate’s long-standing reputation for producing some of Pomerol’s most profound and ageworthy wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2015 shows a deep, vibrant garnet to purple hue, with an almost opaque core hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is expansive and hedonistic, opening with black fruit jam, plum pudding, blueberry compote and redcurrant jelly, then unfolding into layers of rose petals, fine dark chocolate, licorice, menthol and a subtle, earthy note of wild mushrooms.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, plush and richly textured, coating the mouth with dense layers of perfumed black and blue fruits. Despite its decadence, it remains poised, framed by velvety, ultra-fine tannins and a seamless thread of freshness that keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is very long, deeply mineral and resonant, with lingering dark fruit, cocoa and floral nuances. Still in the early stages of its evolution, this 2015 has excellent aging potential—expect it to develop greater complexity and tertiary notes over the next 15–25 years, and to drink well for even longer under proper cellaring conditions.
Production
Trotanoy’s vineyards sit on some of Pomerol’s most coveted terroir, a rare mosaic of deep clay interlaced with gravel that naturally restricts vigor and yields incredibly concentrated, characterful Merlot. The estate typically harvests by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous fruit selection. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified traditionally, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatics and structure. The young wine is then aged in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new), where it gains its polished texture, fine-grained tannins and subtle spice, without ever overpowering the purity of the fruit or the strong mineral signature of the site.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2015 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, or slow-braised veal and duck. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and earthy truffle preparations, as well as well-aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours for a young bottle to fully open its aromatics and soften the tannins; older bottles should be decanted more gently and briefly, mainly to separate any sediment.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s historic and most sought-after names, renowned for producing deeply structured, profoundly textured Merlot-based wines that age gracefully for decades. The estate dates back to at least the 18th century and today is under the stewardship of the Moueix family, a leading force on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Trotanoy’s unique terroir and consistently rigorous vineyard and cellar practices have made it a reference point in the region, often mentioned alongside Pomerol’s most illustrious châteaux. Its wines are celebrated for their combination of power, density, and unmistakable elegance, and the 2015 vintage stands as a testament to the property’s enduring excellence.
