Description

Trotanoy 2010 is a benchmark Pomerol from one of Bordeaux’s most revered Right Bank estates, offering a powerful yet deeply nuanced expression of Merlot in a great vintage. This wine stands out for its combination of dense, muscular fruit, polished structure, and classic Trotanoy earthiness. Rooted in the estate’s exceptional clay and gravel soils, the 2010 reflects both the nobility of its terroir and the long tradition of meticulous winemaking that has made Trotanoy a collector’s favorite.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2010 shows a deep, opaque garnet color with a youthful core and only the faintest rim evolution, signaling its impressive concentration and long life ahead. The nose opens with layered aromas of prunes and dried mulberries, baked black cherries and black plum, followed by notes of cigar box, menthol, graphite, and a subtle iron-mineral edge. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a striking combination of power and refinement. Ripe black fruits—black cherry, blackberry compote, and plum—are framed by firm, grainy tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine lifted despite its density. Earthy undertones of truffle, forest floor, cocoa, and warm spice emerge with air, leading into a long, savory finish marked by tobacco and dark chocolate. The 2010 vintage has endowed this Trotanoy with superb aging potential; while already compelling if well-aerated, it will continue to develop complexity and soften over the next 10–20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
Trotanoy lies on the western plateau of Pomerol, where a rare mix of deep, iron-rich clay and gravel soils yields naturally low yields and profoundly structured wines, particularly well-suited to Merlot. The vineyard is planted predominantly to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, and grapes are harvested by hand in small lots to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit is selected. Following careful sorting, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to preserve the character of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—of which a high proportion are new—for around 18–24 months, allowing the tannins to refine and the complex fruit, spice, and earthy notes to knit together into the estate’s signature, long-lived style.

Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2010 is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, braised beef cheeks, or game birds like duck and pigeon. Classic French dishes—truffled poultry, mushroom ragout, or a simple entrecôte with jus—highlight its earthy depth and refined texture. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or a well-matured English cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). Decant for 2–3 hours in advance if drinking now to allow the wine to unfold its full aromatic spectrum and soften the tannins; in another decade, a shorter decant will likely suffice.

Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s historic, blue-chip estates, long celebrated for producing some of the appellation’s most profound and long-lived wines. Its name, roughly translating to “too annoying” or “too laborious,” is a nod to the difficulty of working its heavy clay soils—precisely the feature that gives such depth and structure to the wines. Over the decades, under the stewardship of the Moueix family, Trotanoy has solidified its status as a reference point in Pomerol, second only to a tiny handful of the region’s most illustrious names. Renowned critics frequently place Trotanoy among the top wines of each vintage, and bottles from great years like 2010 are prized by collectors worldwide for their ability to evolve gracefully over decades.
