Description

Trotanoy 2009 is a benchmark Pomerol from one of Bordeaux’s most revered terroirs, offering depth, precision and hedonistic pleasure in equal measure. From a notably successful vintage on the Right Bank, this wine has long been hailed as one of the standout Pomerols of 2009. It combines luxuriant, ripe fruit with a firm, classical structure, showing why Trotanoy is considered among the very finest names in the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2009 is deeply colored, with an opaque garnet core and a slightly ruby-tinged rim that hints at graceful evolution rather than full maturity. The nose is intense and immediate, unfolding with layers of ripe blackberry, black plum and dark cherry, intertwined with notes of roasted chestnut, black truffle, and a subtle hint of warm earth and graphite. Gentle tones of cocoa, fine cedar and a touch of glycerin-like richness add to the sense of opulence and precision. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, yet impressively structured. The fruit is plush and juicy at first sip—blackberries, damsons and cassis—before firmer elements of mineral, spice and fine-grained tannin reveal themselves. Oak is beautifully integrated, providing polish and sweetness without overshadowing the terroir-driven character. There is a remarkable backbone running through the mid-palate, ensuring the wine never feels overdone. The finish is exceptionally persistent, coating the mouth with dark fruit, truffle and subtle savory nuances that linger for a long time. While already stunning, the 2009 Trotanoy still has considerable aging potential and should continue to develop complexity over the next 15–20 years, and likely beyond in ideal cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Trotanoy lies on Pomerol’s prized plateau, on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, where a mosaic of clay and gravel soils—particularly dense, iron-rich clay—gives Merlot (often with a supporting portion of Cabernet Franc) its hallmark depth and sensuality. The estate’s low-yielding vines are carefully tended and typically harvested by hand parcel by parcel, allowing for meticulous selection of perfectly ripe grapes. In the cellar, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve both concentration and finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of which are new, allowing Trotanoy 2009 to gain its layered texture, integration of tannins and subtle notes of spice and toast while remaining firmly expressive of its Pomerol origins.

Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2009 is a natural match for richly flavored, refined dishes: think roast lamb with garlic and herbs, beef tenderloin or côte de boeuf, game birds, and dishes with truffle, mushrooms or slow-braised sauces. It also shines alongside classic French cuisine—duck breast, veal with morels, or hearty lentil and mushroom casseroles. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity without emphasizing alcohol or tannin. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended at this stage of its evolution; it will help the wine unfold its full aromatic range and soften the structure while maintaining its impressive backbone.

Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s historic grand estates, with origins dating back to the 18th century and a long-standing reputation for producing some of the appellation’s most profound, long-lived wines. Today it is owned and managed by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, a leading name on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, whose stewardship has further elevated the château’s status. Trotanoy’s consistently low yields, exceptional terroir and traditional, detail-focused winemaking have made it a reference point for serious Pomerol, often compared in stature to the very top names of the region. Vintages like 2009 underscore why collectors and connoisseurs worldwide regard Trotanoy as one of Bordeaux’s most coveted and ageworthy wines.
