Description

Trotanoy 2001 is a classically styled, deeply serious Pomerol that has grown beautifully into its pedigree after a shy, even awkward youth. Once viewed as somewhat reserved in barrel and early bottle tastings, it has since unfurled to show the depth, nuance and quiet power that define the best wines of this storied estate. For collectors and lovers of traditional Right Bank Bordeaux, this vintage offers a window into Trotanoy’s soulful, long-lived character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2001 Trotanoy shows a deep garnet core with a gently bricking rim, reflecting its maturity and evolution. The nose is complex and decidedly tertiary in style, with layers of cigar box, forest floor, truffle and dried rose interwoven with black plum, sweet tobacco, graphite and a touch of warm earth. There’s still plenty of fruit, but it’s now beautifully integrated into the more savory nuances. On the palate, this is structured, firm and focused, with a tight, almost brooding grip that speaks to its underlying energy. Silky yet authoritative tannins frame flavors of dark cherry, plum compote, dried fig, cocoa and subtle spice, all carried by a fresh, linear acidity. The finish is long, harmonious and composed, suggesting a wine that is still on an upward trajectory. With proper cellaring, the 2001 Trotanoy should continue to drink beautifully for at least another decade, evolving further in complexity while maintaining its poise.

Production
Château Trotanoy sits on some of Pomerol’s finest terroir, a mix of heavy clay and gravel that is particularly well-suited to Merlot, with small complementary plantings of Cabernet Franc. The 2001 vintage was harvested by hand, with rigorous selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches were used. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and structure rather than raw power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new), allowing it to slowly knit together, deepen in complexity and gain the polished, textural elegance for which Trotanoy is renowned.

Food & Serving
This mature, terroir-driven Pomerol is an outstanding partner to refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, veal chops, duck breast or game birds like pigeon and quail. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragouts and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture; if opened now, decant gently 1–2 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully express its subtle tertiary complexity without losing its delicate nuances.

Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s most revered estates, long regarded as a benchmark for powerful yet profoundly elegant Merlot-based wines. With roots dating back to the 18th century, its name—derived from "trop ennui," or "too annoying," a nod to the difficulty of working its dense clay soils—hints at the demanding terroir that yields wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Under the stewardship of the Moueix family, Trotanoy has achieved a reputation as one of the Right Bank’s most collectable and age-worthy properties, consistently producing wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the very greatest names in Bordeaux.
