Description
Trotanoy 1998 is a benchmark Right Bank Bordeaux, showcasing the effortless power and depth that have made Pomerol one of the world’s most coveted wine regions. From a superb vintage for Merlot-based wines, this bottle marries opulence with refinement, delivering a truly memorable, ageworthy experience. It’s the kind of wine that rewards both patience in the cellar and attention in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1998 Trotanoy shows a deep garnet-purple hue, still remarkably vibrant for its age. The nose is intensely expressive and complex, with waves of crème de cassis, blackberry tart and blueberry compote, interwoven with notes of cigar box, grilled meat, incense, earthy undertones and dried cherry, lifted by a delicate hint of dried flowers.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a sumptuous, velvety texture that coats the mouth in layers of richly concentrated fruit. Plush black and blue fruits are framed by exotic spices and savory nuances, evolving with air into ever more intricate layers. The tannins are fine, ripe and beautifully integrated, leading into an exceptionally long, multi-dimensional finish. This vintage still has impressive aging potential, and well-stored bottles can comfortably continue to develop added nuance over the next decade or more.
Production
Château Trotanoy lies on one of Pomerol’s most revered terroirs, where deep clay and gravel soils, studded with iron-rich subsoils, give Merlot its hallmark richness, structure and depth. The 1998 vintage in Bordeaux particularly favored the Right Bank, allowing for optimally ripe fruit, often harvested by hand in small parcels to ensure only the finest grapes were selected. In the cellar, Trotanoy is traditionally vinified with great care to preserve purity and concentration, followed by maturation in high-quality French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, to build texture, complexity and longevity without overwhelming the wine’s natural character.
Food & Serving
This 1998 Trotanoy is a superb match for refined, flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, duck confit, or veal with truffle jus. It also shines alongside game birds, mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses that can stand up to its intensity. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and release its layered bouquet, while also gently softening any remaining structure.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s most esteemed estates, long recognized for producing wines of remarkable depth, concentration and longevity. Its name is often traced back to the phrase “trop ennuy”, a nod to the difficulty of working its heavy clay soils, which paradoxically give rise to some of the appellation’s most profound wines. Under meticulous stewardship and with a strong emphasis on terroir expression, Trotanoy has consistently ranked among the top Right Bank properties, earning a reputation for ageworthy, richly textured reds that rival the most illustrious names in Bordeaux.
