Description
Tramin Stoan 2023 is a characterful white blend from Alto Adige, combining Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer into a wine of elegance, freshness and depth. Named after the local word for "stone," it reflects the cool alpine precision and mineral drive that have made this region one of Italy’s most exciting sources of premium white wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a light golden colour. The nose is refined and expressive, with notes of peach, apricot, pear, elderflower and kumquat, layered with white flowers and the delicate spicy scents of jasmine and mimosa.
The palate is intense yet harmonious, unfolding with flavours of pineapple, banana, pear, tomato leaf, green pepper and lemon zest. A subtle salty minerality brings shape and freshness, while the texture remains creamy and balanced through a long, elegant finish. Built with structure and complexity, it should continue to develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
Stoan 2023 is made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer. The grapes are gently pressed immediately after harvest, then undergo slow fermentation at a controlled 18–20°C in wooden barrels. A partial malolactic fermentation also takes place in barrel, adding roundness to the final wine.
Each component is aged separately on its lees in wood before blending, followed by bottling and at least four months of further bottle ageing. In total, the wine spends a minimum of 15 months in maturation, resulting in a layered white with texture, balance and a clear sense of place.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent food wine, especially with a wide range of starters, fish dishes and spicy white meats. It also works beautifully with strongly seasoned pork with mushrooms, where its freshness and mineral backbone help balance richer flavours. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C. Decanting is not necessary, though a little time in the glass will help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Cantina Tramin is one of the most respected producers in Alto Adige, a cooperative winery with deep roots in the region and a strong reputation for precision-driven, high-quality wines. Over the years, it has become especially known for expressive whites that capture the alpine terroir of South Tyrol, as well as for setting a benchmark for the area’s modern style. Tramin’s wines are widely recognised for their balance, purity and strong sense of regional identity.
