Description
Tramin Maglen Pinot Nero Riserva 2022 is a refined expression of cool-climate Pinot Noir from the dramatic slopes of Trentino-Alto Adige. Crafted by the renowned Cantina Tramin, this Riserva marries Alpine freshness with Burgundian elegance, resulting in a red that is both precise and deeply characterful. Its limited-production status and careful élevage make it a compelling choice for collectors and Pinot lovers seeking something beyond the classic regions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Maglen Pinot Nero Riserva 2022 shows a luminous ruby-red hue with garnet highlights, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose is beautifully layered: wild red berries, cranberry, raspberry, and pomegranate are framed by notes of rose petals, violet, and a delicate spiciness of white pepper, clove, and a touch of cedar from its time in oak. Subtle hints of forest floor, dried herbs, and crushed stone add complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is a finely etched, medium-bodied Pinot Nero with vibrant acidity and silky yet firm tannins that speak to its mountain origins. Juicy red cherry and raspberry are joined by blood orange zest, savory spice, and a whisper of smoky minerality. The finish is long, precise, and refreshing, with a mouthwatering salinity that invites another sip. While already enjoyable in its youth, the 2022 Riserva has the backbone to develop further complexity over the next 6–10 years, gaining more tertiary notes of undergrowth, truffle, and dried flowers with careful cellaring.
Production
Maglen is sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Alto Adige, where steep, sun-exposed slopes, cool nights, and well-drained calcareous and porphyry-rich soils give Pinot Nero an ideal home. The grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to preserve berry integrity, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the healthiest, ripest fruit goes into the Riserva. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel or wooden vats with controlled temperatures and a mix of gentle pump-overs or punch-downs to extract color and fine tannins without harshness. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels—often a combination of barriques and larger casks—for an extended period, followed by bottle aging to harmonize the components and build the nuanced, elegant profile that defines the Maglen Riserva.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Nero Riserva shines alongside refined, savory dishes where its freshness and finesse can take center stage. Think roast duck or guinea fowl, veal scaloppine, herb-crusted pork loin, or mushroom-based dishes such as risotto with porcini or tagliatelle with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with alpine cheeses like aged Asiago or mildly nutty cow’s milk cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F). Decanting for 30–45 minutes helps the youthful 2022 vintage open up its aromatics and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its first few years.
