Description
Tramin’s Nussbaumer Gewürztraminer is a benchmark wine from Alto Adige, prized for its intensely aromatic style, elegant richness, and unmistakable personality. Made in one of the region’s most celebrated white wine expressions, it combines exotic fruit, floral depth, and a striking mineral edge in a way that has made Nussbaumer a reference point for Gewürztraminer lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant, golden hue with a luminous sheen. The nose is remarkably layered, unfolding with rose petals, lilies, ylang-ylang, and gardenia, followed by ripe notes of cantaloupe, mango, passion fruit, lychee, and bright citrus peel. Underneath, a warm spice register of dried spices, ginger, saffron, clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg adds depth and complexity.
The palate is lush and highly aromatic, yet balanced by juicy freshness and a saline, mineral character that becomes even more pronounced with bottle age. Despite its richness, the wine remains poised and energetic, finishing with exceptional length and an almost endless aftertaste. It has excellent aging potential, with its complexity and mineral drive continuing to develop beautifully over time.
Production
The grapes are harvested by hand and transported in small crates to preserve their integrity. After a short maceration, they are gently pressed, and fermentation proceeds very slowly at a controlled 18°C in small stainless steel tanks. The wine then clarifies and matures on its lees before being bottled, where it continues aging for an additional four months. In total, the maturation period lasts around 15 months, allowing the wine to build both aromatic precision and texture.
Food & Serving
This is a wonderfully versatile wine at the table and particularly rewarding with fish starters, smoked meats, mild aged cheeses, poultry, swordfish, tuna, and shellfish. It is also a superb match for intensely spiced Asian dishes, where its aromatic richness can meet bold flavors without losing balance. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and decanting is generally not necessary unless you want to encourage the wine’s full aromatic expression.
Producer
Cantina Tramin is one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperatives, long recognized for producing wines that reflect the character and precision of the region. Founded in 1898, it has built a strong reputation for quality and for showcasing both native and international varieties with clarity and elegance. Nussbaumer stands as one of its most celebrated wines, widely regarded as a flagship Gewürztraminer and a key reference for the appellation.
