Description

Tornatore Etna Bianco Zottorinotto 2024 is a distinctive dry white wine made exclusively from Carricante, one of Etna’s most expressive native grape varieties. Grown on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, it combines volcanic minerality and pronounced salinity with the depth and texture gained from extended ageing in acacia wood. The Tornatore family has cultivated these volcanic soils since 1865, contributing to the wine’s strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a bright straw-yellow colour with clear golden reflections. Its intense nose brings together elegant notes of vanilla and honey with aromas of broom blossom and ripe yellow peach, creating a layered and inviting aromatic profile. On the palate, it is structured and complex, with a refreshing saline character and finely etched volcanic minerality. The finish is long, persistent and refined, with the fruit, subtle wood influence and savoury freshness held in excellent balance. Its concentration and structure give it the potential to develop further in bottle over the coming years.

Production
The Carricante grapes are organically cultivated in the Zottorinotto area near Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The vineyards are planted in deep volcanic soils and trained using spur-pruned Guyot, with the grapes harvested carefully by hand in autumn. After selection, destemming and gentle pressing, the must undergoes spontaneous fermentation without temperature control in acacia barrels. The wine then rests on its fine lees for eight months, followed by a further eight months of maturation in the same barrels and an additional six months of bottle ageing before release.

Food & Serving
Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its balance of freshness, salinity and aromatic complexity. It is an excellent match for grilled or baked fish, shellfish, seafood pasta and richer fish preparations, while its structure also allows it to accompany savoury aged cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a brief decant or a few minutes in the glass can help open the wine’s layered aromas, particularly when enjoyed young.

Producer
Cantine Tornatore has been working with the vineyards of Etna since 1865 and is deeply connected to the volcanic landscape around Castiglione di Sicilia. The estate oversees every stage of production, from vineyard cultivation to ageing, with a focus on expressing the character of native Sicilian varieties and the distinctive soils of Mount Etna. Its Etna wines have received recognition from leading critics, including James Suckling and Robert Parker, for their mineral precision, complexity and regional identity.
