Description
Tommasi Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2022 is a rich, characterful red from one of Valpolicella’s benchmark producers. Made using the traditional “ripasso” method, it bridges the gap between classic Valpolicella and full-bodied Amarone, offering depth, warmth and remarkable value. This is a polished, modern expression of a historic style that has made Veneto reds famous worldwide.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Ripasso shows a deep ruby-red colour with garnet highlights at the rim. The nose is generous and inviting, with notes of ripe red cherry, plum and blackcurrant layered with dried herbs, sweet spices, cocoa and a touch of dried violet and tobacco.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with silky, well-integrated tannins and a vibrant, food-friendly acidity. Flavours of morello cherry, blackberry and baked plum are enriched by hints of raisins, licorice, dark chocolate and a subtle savoury edge from the ripasso process. The finish is long, warming and elegant, with lingering spice and a gentle dried-fruit complexity. Enjoyable now for its juiciness and balance, it also has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 5–7 years.
Production
The grapes for Tommasi Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2022 come from selected vineyards in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone in Veneto, where limestone and clay soils, combined with hillside exposures, give naturally concentrated, aromatic fruit. Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone are harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest bunches are used. After the initial fermentation as a classic Valpolicella, the wine undergoes the traditional ripasso process: it is refermented on the dried grape skins (marc) from Tommasi’s Amarone, adding body, colour, tannin and complexity. It then ages in large Slavonian oak casks, which respect the purity of the fruit while allowing the flavours to harmonise and gain depth.
Food & Serving
This Ripasso is a versatile partner for richly flavoured dishes: think braised beef, roast lamb, game birds, grilled sausages, hearty stews, mushroom risotto and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Grana Padano. It also pairs beautifully with oven-baked pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas with cured meats. Serve at 16–18°C; if opened in its youth, decant for 30–45 minutes to let the aromas open and the tannins soften. Simply uncork and pour for more mature bottles, as the wine will continue to evolve gently in the glass.
