Description

Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Il Sestante 2021 is a rich, full-bodied red that captures the depth and intensity that have made Amarone a modern Italian classic. Crafted from carefully selected Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, this wine offers the luxurious concentration and velvety texture that Amarone lovers seek. Rooted in the historic hills of Valpolicella in Veneto, it reflects generations of expertise in the traditional appassimento method that defines the style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Il Sestante 2021 shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at both youth and structure. The nose is generous and expressive, with aromas of ripe dark cherries, dried plum, fig and blackberries layered with notes of sweet spice, cocoa, licorice, dried herbs and a touch of tobacco and vanilla from oak aging. On the palate, this Amarone is full-bodied and enveloping, with a plush, almost creamy texture supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. Flavors of macerated cherry, dried red fruits, candied orange peel and dark chocolate unfold alongside hints of clove, cinnamon and a savory, earthy undertone. The natural richness and warmth are balanced by a fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and food-friendly, leading to a long, warming finish. While already enjoyable in its youth, the 2021 vintage has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years in a good cellar, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes over time.

Production
Sourced from hillside vineyards in Valpolicella, Il Sestante benefits from classic Veneto terroir: well-drained calcareous and marl soils, good elevation and breezy exposures that help maintain both ripeness and natural acidity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to allow careful selection of only the healthiest bunches, an essential step before the traditional appassimento process. After harvest, the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes are laid out in well-ventilated drying lofts, where they slowly dehydrate over several months, concentrating sugars, flavors and aromas. The dried grapes are then gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatics while extracting color and structure. The wine is matured in oak (often a mix of larger casks and/or barrels) to soften tannins and integrate complexity without overwhelming the fruit, before a period of bottle resting to harmonize the final blend.

Food & Serving
Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Il Sestante 2021 is a superb partner to rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb shanks, game (venison, wild boar), and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Grana Padano. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, mushroom ragù, and deeply flavored risottos, and can serve as a contemplative after-dinner wine on its own or alongside dark chocolate. Serve at 17–18°C (around 62–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style or Burgundy-style glasses to allow the aromatics to open fully. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the wine unwind and show its full aromatic and textural complexity.

Producer
Tommasi is one of the most respected family-owned wineries in Valpolicella, with roots dating back to 1902. Over more than a century, the Tommasi family has grown from a small local estate into a benchmark producer in Veneto, particularly renowned for its Amarone wines. Their holdings span some of the finest hillside sites in the region, and the family has been instrumental in elevating the quality and international reputation of Amarone della Valpolicella. Combining traditional methods such as hand-harvesting and appassimento with careful, modern cellar practices, Tommasi has become a reference point for wines that balance power, elegance and a strong sense of place in the Veneto landscape.
