Description
Tommasi’s Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a benchmark wine from one of the most respected names in Valpolicella. Crafted in the heart of the Classico zone using the traditional Appassimento method, it reflects both the heritage of the region and the meticulous work of a family estate with deep roots in the area.
Tasting Notes
This Amarone typically shows a deep, dark ruby color with impressive concentration in the glass. The bouquet is layered and expressive, with notes of dried cherries, ripe plum, fig, cocoa, sweet spice, and a subtle balsamic lift. On the palate it is full-bodied, velvety, and powerful, with rich fruit, polished tannins, and the characteristic warmth and complexity that make Amarone so distinctive.
The long drying period brings remarkable depth and intensity, while the aging in large Slovenian oak adds structure and elegance rather than overt oakiness. This is a wine built for the table and for cellaring, and it should continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8–15 years, gaining further nuance and softness with time.
Production
The grapes come from Tommasi’s vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico area, including prized hillside sites such as La Groletta, Conca d’Oro, and Ca’ Florian. These well-exposed vineyards benefit from the balanced climate and ideal growing conditions of the region, allowing the fruit to reach full maturity before harvest. Only the best bunches are selected for Amarone, and after picking they are laid out to dry on small racks in airy buildings until February, losing around half their weight and concentrating flavor and natural sugars. After fermentation, the wine is matured for at least three years in 35 hl Slovenian oak casks, followed by a year in bottle.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, venison, game, truffle risotto, and mature hard cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb or hearty mushroom dishes. Serve at around 18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours to allow its aromas and texture to fully open.
Producer
Tommasi Viticoltori is a family-owned producer based in Pedemonte, in the center of Valpolicella Classico. What began as a small vineyard founded by Giacomo Tommasi has grown over decades into a 205-hectare estate with a strong reputation for quality and consistency. The estate is especially renowned for its Amarone Classico, a wine that has become one of the defining expressions of Valpolicella and a flagship for the region.
