Description

Tirecul Lagravière Monbazillac 2002 is a beautifully mature dessert wine from South West France, offering the kind of depth and complexity that only comes with time. Crafted from Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc in the sweet-wine heartland of Monbazillac, it reflects both the region’s long tradition of botrytised wines and the producer’s talent for creating elegant, age-worthy styles.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep amber to golden-brown hue, a clear sign of its evolution in bottle. The bouquet is expected to be layered and expressive, with notes of dried apricot, quince, honey, marmalade, candied citrus peel, and toasted nuts, alongside subtle floral and spice tones. On the palate, the wine should feel rich and rounded, balanced by the lively freshness that keeps Monbazillac from becoming heavy. Flavors of baked stone fruit, caramelized citrus, and honeyed sweetness are often matched by a gently oxidative, nutty complexity. With its maturity, the wine is likely at or near peak drinking now, though well-stored bottles may continue to show gracefully for a few more years.

Production
Monbazillac lies in South West France, where autumn mist and humidity from nearby rivers create ideal conditions for noble rot, or botrytis cinerea, to concentrate sugar and flavor in the grapes. Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc are well suited to the region’s terroir, bringing fragrance, freshness, and structure to sweet wines of real character. While specific vinification details for this cuvée are not provided, wines of this style are typically made from carefully selected late-harvest or botrytised grapes, pressed gently and fermented slowly to retain balance and finesse.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to best show the wine’s aromatic complexity and freshness. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, almond pastries, or simply enjoyed on its own after a meal. Decanting is not usually necessary, but an older bottle can benefit from a short aeration if showing reduction on opening.

Producer
Tirecul La Gravière is a respected Monbazillac producer known for focusing on expressive, terroir-driven sweet wines from this historic appellation. The estate has earned recognition for showing that Monbazillac can deliver serious quality, balance, and aging potential, not just sweetness. Its wines are often appreciated by collectors and dessert-wine lovers for their precision, richness, and sense of place.
