Description
Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Lagrein is a distinctive South Tyrolean red that showcases one of the region’s most characterful native grape varieties. With its balance of fruit, freshness, and subtle oak influence, it reflects both the personality of Lagrein and the elegant style for which Tiefenbrunner is known.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby-red color with violet reflections. The bouquet is delicately perfumed with notes of violets and cherry, followed by a fuller, fruit-driven palate that feels both generous and refined.
The finish is long and well-proportioned, supported by soft tannins and a pleasant thread of acidity that keeps the wine lively. While approachable in its youth, it has the structure to develop nicely over the next few years, gaining added depth and complexity.
Production
The grapes come from vineyards on the slopes of Niclara and Cortaccia, where the altitude and local conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic definition. Made from 100% Lagrein, a historic indigenous variety of Trentino-Alto Adige, the wine is fermented on the skins in concrete vats, followed by malolactic fermentation and ten months of maturation in oak—75% in small barrels and 25% in large casks. After blending, it rests for a further two months in concrete before bottling and an additional five months of bottle aging.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for rich but not overly heavy dishes, such as roasted poultry, grilled sausages, braised veal, mushroom risotto, or South Tyrolean speck and hard cheeses. Serve it at around 16–18°C and consider decanting for 30 minutes if opening it young, to let the aromatics and texture open up fully.
Producer
Tiefenbrunner is a longstanding family-owned winery in South Tyrol, with a reputation for crafting precise, terroir-driven wines that highlight the region’s native varieties and cool-climate character. The estate is particularly respected for combining traditional winemaking with a refined, modern approach, and it has become one of the best-known producers in Trentino-Alto Adige.
