Description

Tiefenbrunner Sauvignon Riserva Vigna Rachtl 2021 is a striking, single-vineyard expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the cool, alpine-influenced hills of Trentino-Alto Adige. This is not your everyday Sauvignon: it’s a structured, ageworthy white that combines mountain freshness with remarkable depth and complexity. Produced only from the carefully selected Vigna Rachtl site, this Riserva showcases the precision and elegance that have made Tiefenbrunner one of the region’s benchmarks for premium white wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Vigna Rachtl shows a luminous, straw-yellow color edged with greenish highlights, signaling both youth and vibrancy. The nose is layered and refined rather than overtly tropical, with aromas of gooseberry, white currant and grapefruit peel interwoven with alpine herbs, nettle, sage and a touch of elderflower. Subtle notes of flint, wet stone and a gentle smokiness hint at its mineral-rich terroir and careful élevage. On the palate, this Sauvignon Riserva is precise and tightly focused, with a lively, saline acidity that carries flavors of citrus zest, green apple, ripe pear and light passion fruit. A fine, chalky minerality runs through the mid-palate, complemented by nuanced notes of fresh cut herbs and a discreet, well-integrated oak spice. The texture is both creamy and linear, with excellent length and a clean, lingering finish. Built with structure and balance rather than sheer exuberance, the 2021 has very good aging potential and will reward 5–10 years in the cellar, gaining additional complexity, honeyed nuances and more pronounced smokiness over time.

Production
Vigna Rachtl is a steep, high-altitude single vineyard in the hills around Kurtatsch/Cortaccia in Trentino-Alto Adige, where warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening of Sauvignon Blanc. The soils are predominantly limestone and gravel with some porphyry influence, providing excellent drainage and a distinct mineral signature. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small crates to ensure perfect fruit selection and minimal oxidation. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and clarified before fermentation, which usually takes place partly in temperature-controlled stainless steel and partly in large oak or acacia casks to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the varietal character. The wine is then aged on fine lees for several months, with periodic bâtonnage to build creaminess and depth while preserving the wine’s natural freshness and tension.

Food & Serving
This structured, elegant Sauvignon Riserva is a superb partner for refined dishes such as grilled sea bass, turbot or halibut, seafood risotto, scallops, and shellfish with herbs and citrus. It also pairs beautifully with asparagus, goat cheese, fresh cheeses, vegetable terrines, sushi and sashimi, and light white meat dishes such as herb-roasted chicken or veal in delicate sauces. Serve at around 10–12°C to highlight both aromatics and texture. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing greater aromatic complexity and a more expansive palate.

Producer
Tiefenbrunner is one of Alto Adige’s historic family estates, with roots reaching back to the mid-19th century at the Turmhof estate in Kurtatsch/Cortaccia. Over generations, the winery has played a key role in shaping the region’s reputation for precise, alpine-style whites and refined, ageworthy wines. Their focus on carefully selected sites, low yields and meticulous vineyard work has made Tiefenbrunner a reference point for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco and other classic varieties of the region. The Vigna Rachtl bottling sits among their flagship cuvées, regularly earning strong critical recognition and underscoring the estate’s status as a leading producer in Trentino-Alto Adige.
