Description
Thomas Niedermayr Hof Gandberg T.N. 76 Weißburgunder Bio 2017 is a deeply characterful Pinot Blanc from the cool, alpine slopes of Trentino–Südtirol. Crafted from over 40-year-old vines and vinified with minimal intervention, it unites Burgundian elegance with South Tyrolean precision. This is the estate’s only non-PIWI (non-fungus-resistant) variety, preserved out of respect for family tradition and a profound attachment to these old, gnarled vines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this organic Weißburgunder shows a luminous straw-yellow hue with golden reflections, hinting at both maturity and concentration. The nose is expressive yet refined: ripe pear and vineyard peach mingle with notes of elderflower, subtle citrus zest, and a creamy suggestion of cocoa butter and brioche from the long lees aging. Gentle herbal and mineral undertones evoke mountain air and cool stone.
On the palate, the wine is silky and layered, in a truly classical Burgundian style. A precise, alpine freshness lifts the generous fruit, while a fine, chalky-mineral backbone provides structure. Flavors of pear, white peach and yellow apple unfold alongside hints of almonds, wildflowers and a delicate, savoury spice. The texture is supple and elegant, with well-integrated acidity and a long, quietly persistent finish. Thanks to its concentration, natural structure and extended aging on the lees, this 2017 vintage still has very good aging potential, evolving over the next 5–8 years into more nutty, honeyed and complex tertiary nuances.
Production
The Weißburgunder for T.N. 76 comes from old vines planted by Thomas Niedermayr’s father more than four decades ago, trained in the now-rare “Hochstammerziehung” (high-stem) system on the slopes of the Gandberg in Trentino–Südtirol. Here, cool mountain nights, strong diurnal shifts and calcareous, well-drained soils give naturally low yields and a pronounced mineral character. Out of respect for the old vineyard, yields are further reduced before harvest to concentrate extract and intensity. The grapes are hand-picked and carefully selected; a portion of the must undergoes two days of skin contact for added structure and aromatic depth. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, split between wooden casks and stainless steel tanks to balance texture and purity of fruit. The wine then spends 22 months on its fine lees, gaining complexity and creaminess, before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered, preserving its full, authentic character.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Blanc is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with alpine and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine alike. Try it with grilled or roasted freshwater fish, seared scallops, shellfish, poultry in light cream or morel sauces, veal schnitzel, or delicate pork dishes. It also complements risotto with spring vegetables, mushroom dishes, mild to medium-hard mountain cheeses, and fine vegetable tarts. Serve at 10–12 °C to showcase its aromatic depth and textural finesse. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, especially as the wine gains a few years of bottle age, helps open up its more subtle floral, nutty and mineral nuances.
Producer
Thomas Niedermayr Hof Gandberg is a family-run estate in Trentino–Südtirol, known locally as a pioneer of organic viticulture and PIWI (fungus-resistant) grape varieties in the region. Founded by Thomas’s father, who planted the original vineyards—including the historic Weißburgunder parcel—over forty years ago, the estate has long focused on working in harmony with nature, eschewing synthetic chemicals and emphasizing biodiversity. Under Thomas Niedermayr’s stewardship, Hof Gandberg has gained recognition for its characterful, terroir-driven wines that reflect the cool alpine climate and limestone-rich soils of South Tyrol. The T.N. 76 Weißburgunder stands as a respectful tribute to the estate’s roots: the last remaining classic variety among predominantly resistant crossings, and a benchmark for elegant, naturally made Pinot Blanc from the region.
