Description

The Sadie Family Swartland Old Vine Series Treinspoor 2022 is a refined and characterful red that captures the soul of Swartland’s old vine heritage. Crafted predominantly from Tinta Barocca grown in the Western Cape, it marries dark-fruited intensity with remarkable finesse and freshness. Part of the highly sought-after Old Vine Series, Treinspoor has become a modern South African classic, showcasing how Portuguese varieties can excel in Cape terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Treinspoor shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet highlights that hint at both concentration and elegance. The nose is stately yet inviting, layering dark red fruit with ripe black cherries, spiced plums, and a subtle wild, herbal edge. Underneath the fruit, notes of crushed violets, graphite, and a gentle savoury spice add complexity and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and beautifully poised, with 13% alcohol lending freshness rather than weight. Dark cherry and plum flavours are framed by fine-grained, powdery tannins that give structure without harshness. A vivid mineral tension runs through the mid-palate, lifting the fruit and adding definition. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering, mouth-coating tannins and a subtle, earthy depth that suggests excellent cellaring potential. Enjoyable now with a decant, it should evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and savoury nuance.

Production
Treinspoor comes from old Tinta Barocca vines rooted in the Swartland’s diverse Western Cape terroir, where decomposed granite and iron-rich soils combine with a warm, dry climate to produce intensely flavoured yet balanced fruit. These old vines naturally yield small crops of concentrated grapes, harvested by hand to ensure careful selection and optimal ripeness. In 2022, around 7,500 bottles were produced, with 50% whole bunches used in the ferment to enhance aromatic lift, tannin definition, and a sense of energy in the wine. Fermentation is traditionally handled with a gentle touch, followed by maturation in neutral vessels so that the vineyard character, rather than oak, takes centre stage.

Food & Serving
This refined but structured red is a versatile partner for flavourful, savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, slow-braised beef short ribs, game birds, or rich stews, and works equally well alongside grilled pork, charcuterie, and hard cheeses such as aged Manchego or Comté. The wine shows best served at 16–18°C; a light chill is preferable to serving it too warm. Decant for 45–60 minutes in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the aromatics, and consider a longer decant for bottles enjoyed within the first few years after release.

Producer
The Sadie Family Wines, founded by Eben Sadie, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s benchmark producers and a driving force behind Swartland’s global reputation. From humble beginnings, the estate has become synonymous with meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention winemaking, and a deep respect for old vines and heritage varieties. The Old Vine Series, including Treinspoor, is a celebration of South Africa’s historic vineyards and has helped shine a spotlight on Swartland as one of the country’s most exciting wine regions. Consistently acclaimed by international critics, The Sadie Family has played a pivotal role in redefining the quality potential of Cape wines on the world stage.
