Description

The Sadie Family’s Swartland Old Vine Series Rotsbank 2024 is a finely etched South African white built around old-vine Chenin Blanc, offering the kind of quiet complexity that has made Eben Sadie one of the most respected names in the Cape. Sourced from the Swartland and crafted with a strong focus on site expression, it reflects both the character of the region’s dry-farmed old vines and the modern renaissance of premium South African white wine.

Tasting Notes
This is a restrained, understated white at first, with a pale, luminous appearance and a delicate aromatic profile rather than an immediate rush of fruit. On the nose, expect subtle notes of wet wool, earth, spice and a faint herbal edge, while the palate is linear and precise, showing bright acidity, a gently textured mid-palate and a fresh, slightly smoky, mineral-tinged finish. The wine’s style suggests excellent balance and the potential to develop additional depth with a few years in bottle. Rather than aiming for opulence, Rotsbank 2024 favors clarity, tension and nuance, making it especially appealing for those who appreciate layered, terroir-driven Chenin Blanc.

Production
Rotsbank comes from the Swartland in South Africa’s Western Cape, a region known for its warm climate, ancient soils and low-yielding old vines that produce concentrated fruit with natural freshness. The vineyard material is typically dry-farmed and carefully selected, with harvest timed to preserve acidity and site character; vinification is handled with a light touch to protect purity and texture, allowing the vineyard voice to remain front and center.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, line-caught fish, scallops, or sushi, as well as roast chicken, creamy vegetable dishes and lightly spiced Asian cuisine. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a short decant if serving young to help the wine open up and reveal its subtle aromatic layers.

Producer
The Sadie Family, led by Eben Sadie, is one of South Africa’s most influential producers and a driving force behind the country’s rise in fine wine. Based in the Swartland, the estate has earned international acclaim for its old-vine bottlings, minimal-intervention philosophy and profound focus on terroir, with numerous accolades and a reputation for producing some of the Cape’s most distinctive and age-worthy wines.

Full-bodied, spicy, structured. Semillon from old vines does not behave like the modern clones; with less aromatic grapes but a rich mouthfeel, these become super-cool wines. Perfect to pair with hearty dishes where red wine would be an easy choice, but you want to think outside the box. It sums up everything I think is trendy and exciting about South Africa today: old vines and lots of flavor, completely unique
