Description

The Sadie Family’s Citrusdal Mountain Old Vine Series Kokerboom 2023 is a distinctive South African white that captures both rarity and pedigree, made from a historic blend of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Gris. Sourced from old vines dating back to the first half of the 20th century, it combines generous texture with remarkable energy, reflecting one of South Africa’s most celebrated white-wine expressions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kokerboom 2023 shows a rich, almost waxy profile with notable weight and volume, yet it remains lively rather than heavy. The aromas move toward vaseline-like creaminess, honey, saffron, and ripe apricot, giving the wine an exotic, deeply layered character. On the palate, it is viscous and mouth-filling, but balanced by freshness and a sense of lift that keeps the wine from feeling sticky or overly opulent. It has the structure and concentration to age gracefully over several years, likely gaining more nuance and savoury complexity with time.

Production
The grapes come from an isolated vineyard on Citrusdal Mountain, planted on weathered Table Mountain sandstone with a high iron content, a terroir that helps shape the wine’s mineral depth and intensity. Because of the vineyard’s remote location, harvested grapes are transported for about four hours back to the winery, then chilled overnight before vinification. The wine is aged for 12 months in an old foudre, a gentle élevage that preserves texture while allowing the old-vine fruit to express its full character.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for richer seafood dishes, roast chicken, creamy pasta, or lightly spiced Asian cuisine, as well as aged cheeses and dishes with saffron or nutty, savoury accents. Serve slightly chilled, around 10–12°C, and consider brief decanting if you want the wine’s layered aromatics to open more fully.

Producer
The Sadie Family is one of South Africa’s most respected producers, known for championing old vines, site-driven wines, and meticulous craftsmanship. Founded by Eben Sadie, the estate has played a major role in elevating the reputation of South African fine wine, particularly through its Old Vine Series and its focus on expressing the unique character of the Western Cape. Kokerboom was first produced in 2009 and remains one of the label’s most distinctive whites, produced in very limited quantities of around 4,000 bottles.
