Description

Teularju Barbagia Rosso Ghirada Ocruarana 2021 is a characterful Sardinian red that captures the wild, inland soul of the island far from the coastal resorts. Sourced from the highlands of Barbagia, this wine offers an authentic expression of native red grapes shaped by altitude, rocky soils and a rugged Mediterranean climate. Its limited, site-focused production and deep local roots make it a compelling choice for drinkers seeking something distinctive beyond the classic mainland Italian regions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Ghirada Ocruarana shows a vibrant ruby core with garnet flashes at the rim, suggesting both freshness and a touch of seriousness. The nose opens with red and black berries—think wild cherry, raspberry and blackberry—layered with Mediterranean scrub, dried herbs, hints of violet and a subtle, ferrous mineral note that speaks of its mountain origins. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a lively spine of acidity and firm yet well-shaped tannins. Flavors of juicy red plum, cherry and dark berries are joined by notes of dried thyme, licorice, gentle spice and a stony, savory finish that lingers. The structure and freshness suggest that, while it is already approachable with some air, this 2021 has the capacity to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and tobacco with time in bottle.

Production
The Barbagia zone, in the mountainous heart of Sardinia, is defined by poor, rocky soils, significant diurnal temperature swings and relatively high elevations—all factors that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Teularju sources fruit from the Ghirada Ocruarana parcel, where old-vine native red grapes (often field blends typical of the area) are hand-harvested to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters make it to the cellar. Vinification is traditionally minded: careful destemming, a spontaneous or gently guided fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, and a maceration long enough to extract color, aromatics and structure without hard edges. The wine is then matured—typically in neutral vessels such as concrete, steel or older wood—to respect the purity of fruit and terroir, and bottled with minimal intervention to preserve authenticity.

Food & Serving
This Barbagia Rosso is a natural partner for hearty, rustic Mediterranean dishes: roast lamb with herbs, grilled sausages, game birds, braised goat, or slow-cooked ragù over pasta or polenta. It also works beautifully with aged pecorino, charcuterie and dishes featuring roasted vegetables, tomatoes and wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) for best balance of fruit and structure. A short decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine open up its aromatics and soften the tannins, especially in its youth.

Producer
Teularju is a small, quality-driven producer rooted in the interior of Sardinia, focusing on the characterful highland vineyards of Barbagia rather than the island’s more touristic coastal areas. By working closely with old sites such as Ghirada Ocruarana and favoring local varieties, the estate plays a role in preserving Sardinia’s viticultural heritage and the distinctive identity of its mountain reds. With careful, low-intervention work in both vineyard and cellar, Teularju has become part of a new wave of Sardinian growers showcasing the region’s finesse, authenticity and ageworthy potential to a wider audience.

A bold, high-altitude expression from Sardinia’s rugged Barbagia hills, is pure energy in a bottle. Wild cherry, crushed berries and plum meet Mediterranean herbs, spice and a striking stony minerality. Juicy yet structured with fine, gripping tannins and vibrant acidity, it’s a raw, soulful red with real character, tension and personality that stands out immediately.
