Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cara'Gonare 2022 shows a vibrant, deep ruby hue with a translucent edge that hints at both concentration and finesse. The nose is lifted and complex, opening with wild strawberry and ripe raspberry, followed by notes of red cherry, dried herbs, and a gentle floral touch, all wrapped in warm spice and a subtle mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine is silky and finely textured, with juicy red berry fruit at the core and a thread of savory spice—think white pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs, and a hint of licorice. The structure is beautifully balanced: fresh acidity from the higher elevation vineyards keeps the wine lively, while polished tannins give shape without heaviness. The Cara'Gonare plot sits in Barbagia, the mountainous heart of Sardinia, where higher elevations bring cooler nights and a slower, more even ripening of Cannonau. The vineyard, designated as a “Ghirada” (a single, distinct parcel or cru), is dominated by sandy and clay-rich soils, with an abundance of limestone on the steepest slopes, lending both finesse and a marked mineral signature to the wine. Teularju farms this family-owned site with great care, favoring low yields and selective harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes make it into the cellar. Vinification is geared toward purity and finesse: gentle extraction to preserve aromatics and texture, followed by maturation that allows the terroir-driven character of Cannonau to shine without excessive oak influence.

This elegant yet deep Cannonau pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, slow-braised beef or pork, herb-roasted chicken, and rustic Mediterranean dishes featuring tomatoes, olives, and aromatic herbs. It also works well with aged pecorino, semi-hard cow’s milk cheeses, and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both freshness and aromatic complexity. A brief decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open fully, especially in its youth, revealing its layered fruit, spice, and mineral notes.
