Description
Tertre Roteboeuf 2021 is one of Saint-Émilion’s most characterful and idiosyncratic reds, crafted by the ever‑uncompromising François Mitjavile. In this cooler, challenging vintage, he doubles down on his signature opulent style, embracing maturity and texture rather than chasing austerity. The result is a bold, sensual Bordeaux that marries dark fruit richness with a distinctly savory, almost wild complexity that loyal followers of the estate will recognize instantly.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Tertre Roteboeuf 2021 shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with a luminous rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive: layers of ripe black cherry, cassis and damson plum are wrapped in notes of espresso roast, cocoa nibs and exotic sweet spices. As it opens, more savory nuances emerge—saddle leather, smoked meat, a hint of game and a suggestion of cigar box, all woven into a complex, evolving bouquet.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and layered, with Mitjaville’s trademark supple, velvety tannins. The dark fruit is plush yet precise, framed by flavors of roasted coffee, licorice, clove and a touch of balsamic depth. There is a distinctly meaty, almost animal edge that adds intrigue and intensity, without overwhelming the wine’s underlying elegance. The acidity is finely tuned, giving lift to the generous mid-palate and carrying through to a long, savory, mouthcoating finish. While it offers plenty of immediate hedonistic appeal, this 2021 has the structure to develop further over the next 10–15 years, gaining even more aromatic complexity as the gamey, spicy notes integrate with the fruit.
Production
Tertre Roteboeuf lies on a south- and southeast-facing amphitheater of clay-limestone slopes on the outskirts of Saint‑Émilion, a warm, sheltered terroir that naturally encourages ripeness and depth. The vineyard is planted predominantly to old-vine Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, farmed at very low yields to concentrate flavor. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with meticulous sorting to retain only perfectly mature berries. In 2021, Mitjaville deliberately maintained his chai at a relatively warm 17°C year-round, encouraging a more evolved, textural style that pushes the vintage’s natural character to its full expression. Fermentations are long and gentle, favoring whole berries and careful extraction, after which the wine is aged in barriques (a high proportion new), where it develops its hallmark notes of dark fruit, espresso and exotic spice. The result is a wine that is both unmistakably right-bank Bordeaux and unmistakably Tertre Roteboeuf.
Food & Serving
This 2021 shines alongside rich, deeply flavored dishes that can stand up to its meaty, savory profile: think roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck confit, or venison with a red wine and berry reduction. Earthy accompaniments such as wild mushroom ragout, truffled potato purée or aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda, old Mimolette) complement its darker, smoky nuances. Serve at 16–18°C to keep the fruit fresh while allowing the aromatics to fully unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to tame the wine’s more animal and smoky components and to let the layers of dark fruit, spice and leather knit together in the glass.
Producer
Tertre Roteboeuf is one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive and cult‑followed estates, shaped almost entirely by the vision and intuition of its owner, François Mitjavile. Located in Saint‑Émilion on privileged, sun‑drenched slopes, the domaine quietly built its reputation from the 1980s onwards by defying local orthodoxy: late harvesting, extremely low yields and a readiness to pursue ripeness and textural opulence even in cooler years. Rather than chasing classifications or trends, Mitjaville has focused on crafting wines of sensual depth and individuality, which has earned Tertre Roteboeuf a near-mythic status among collectors and critics alike. Today, the estate is considered one of the right bank’s most singular voices, producing long-lived, unmistakable wines that speak as much of the man as of the terroir.
