Description

Terroir Sense Fronteres Monsant Guix Vermell 2017 is a refined, high-altitude expression of Grenache Noir from the hills of Montsant in Spain, crafted by the acclaimed Terroir al Limit team. This cuvée captures Grenache in a wonderfully lifted, almost weightless style, emphasizing purity, finesse, and a deep sense of place. Grown on an 800-metre plateau of red clay near the famed Les Manyes vineyard in Priorat, it marries vibrant fruit with an almost zen-like balance and mineral drive.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Guix Vermell 2017 shows a luminous, translucent ruby-red hue with a delicate rim, hinting at its finesse-driven style. The nose opens with brilliant red-berry aromas: wild strawberries, raspberry gelée, and fresh cherries, all layered over a core of cool, flinty minerality. Gentle, ethereal spice notes—think mild dried herbs, white pepper, and a touch of rosehip—float above the fruit, giving a lifted, aromatic complexity. On the palate, the wine is silky and finely etched rather than heavy, with juicy red fruit wrapped in ultra-refined, caring tannins. There is a beautiful interplay between ripe yet precise strawberry and cherry flavours and a vibrant, almost “flittering” mineral backbone that gives the wine a sense of levity and length. Whole-bunch fermentation adds a subtle savoury twist and fine structure without weighing it down. Acidity is bright and refreshing, ensuring excellent drinkability now, while the balance and concentration suggest that the 2017 will continue to evolve gracefully for another 6–8 years from vintage, gaining further nuance and complexity.

Production
The Guix Vermell 2017 hails from old-vine Grenache Noir—over 50 years of age—rooted in a high plateau of red clay soils at around 800 metres altitude in Montsant, neighbouring the prestigious Les Manyes site in Priorat. This elevated, breezy location with its poorer, iron-rich clay soils naturally limits yields and concentrates flavour while preserving freshness. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure meticulous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the wine is made with whole-cluster fermentation to capture aromatic lift and fine-grained structure, followed by élevage in amphorae, which respect the purity of fruit and terroir without imparting overt oak influence. Natural sedimentation is allowed to occur, and the wine is bottled unfiltered, reflecting a minimally interventionist philosophy focused on transparency and balance.

Food & Serving
This elegant, mineral-driven Grenache pairs beautifully with refined, flavourful dishes rather than heavy, sauce-laden fare. Think roasted quail or chicken with herbs, grilled lamb chops with thyme and rosemary, charcuterie, or earthy vegetable dishes such as roasted beetroot, grilled peppers, or mushroom-based plates. It also works remarkably well with Mediterranean cuisine—tapas, lamb skewers, or dishes featuring tomato, olive oil, and fresh herbs. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended for younger bottles to allow the wine to unfurl its delicate floral and mineral notes, though its texture is already supple enough to enjoy without extended aeration.

Producer
Terroir Sense Fronteres is a Montsant-focused project born from the vision of Dominik Huber of Terroir al Limit, one of the leading names in Priorat. While Terroir al Limit helped redefine Priorat with a more Burgundian, terroir-driven approach, Terroir Sense Fronteres extends this philosophy across the appellation border into Montsant, showcasing the region’s cooler sites and old-vine Grenache with precision and elegance. Working organically and with minimal intervention, the team emphasizes freshness, transparency, and drinkability over sheer power. Their wines—Guix Vermell among them—have attracted international attention for revealing a more ethereal, high-altitude side of Catalan Grenache, solidifying the producer’s reputation as a benchmark for modern, terroir-expressive wines in the region.
