Description
Terroir al Limit Les Tosses 2016 is a monument to what pure Carignan can achieve in the dramatic slate hillsides of Priorat. Drawn from a single, vertiginous vineyard planted with 90+ year old vines at around 750 metres above sea level, it marries raw power with almost Burgundian finesse. Widely acclaimed and awarded 98 points by The Wine Advocate, this is one of the most elegant, nuanced expressions of Carignan produced anywhere in the world.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Tosses 2016 shows an intense, deep garnet core with a bright, youthful rim that hints at its long life ahead. The nose is strikingly refined for old-vine Carignan: pure red and black cherries, wild berries and violets layered over notes of graphite, wet slate, subtle spice and a whisper of dried herbs. With air, more floral and mineral nuances emerge, giving the wine an almost ethereal lift.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and silken, with a poised, linear structure that carries its concentration effortlessly. Juicy black cherry, dark plum and crunchy red fruits are framed by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant, mouth-watering acidity. The dark slate and graphite minerality is unmistakable and runs through the wine from start to finish, adding depth and tension. The finish is very long, precise and harmonious, suggesting a superb aging potential of easily 12–20 years from vintage, with the best bottles evolving even longer in a good cellar.
Production
Les Tosses comes from a single, steeply terraced vineyard above the village of Torroja del Priorat, rooted in very dark llicorella (slate) soils that define the region’s most profound wines. The 100% Carignan vines are over 90 years old and naturally low-yielding, concentrating flavour and mineral character. Terroir al Limit works organically with a distinctly artisanal mindset, harvesting by hand on the precipitous slopes and making a rigorous selection of the grapes in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation typically relies on indigenous yeasts to preserve the authenticity of the site, with gentle extraction to favour finesse over sheer power. The wine is then matured in a large, seasoned oak foudre, which imparts texture and polish without overt oak flavour, allowing the vineyard’s slate-driven personality and the elegance of the vintage to shine through.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, contemplative red that pairs beautifully with refined, flavourful dishes such as slow-braised lamb shoulder, roast venison, aged ribeye steak, or game birds with wild mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with rich Mediterranean cuisine—think lamb with rosemary and olives, roasted root vegetables, or hearty stews with herbs and tomatoes. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. In its youth, the wine benefits from a vigorous decant—"headfirst into the decanter"—for at least 2 hours to soften the structure and release the layered aromatics; even mature bottles will reward 30–60 minutes of air.
Producer
Terroir al Limit, founded by Dominik Huber and initially guided by the late, legendary winemaker Eben Sadie, has become one of Priorat’s most respected and influential producers. From the outset, the estate focused on expressing the region’s dramatic terroir through old vines, minimal intervention and a more refined, almost Burgundian sensibility in a region once known mainly for sheer power. Working primarily with indigenous varieties like Carignan and Garnacha on steep llicorella slopes, Terroir al Limit has helped redefine the style of top Priorat: less extraction, less new oak and more transparency to site. Wines such as Les Tosses have earned international critical acclaim and are now benchmarks for the region, showcasing the extraordinary potential of old-vine Carignan in this uniquely rugged corner of Spain.
