Description

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 2023 is a graceful and expressive Etna red from one of Sicily’s most respected producers, showing the mineral tension and perfume that have made the slopes of Mount Etna so sought after. Made primarily from Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio, it combines finesse, volcanic character, and a distinctly Burgundian sense of elegance. The Santo Spirito cru has become especially admired for producing wines of depth, purity, and site-driven complexity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a translucent ruby-red color that hints at its delicacy and precision rather than sheer power. The nose is lifted and refined, with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, dried herbs, and subtle volcanic notes such as smoke, ash, and iron. On the palate, it is sleek and energetic, with bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, and a savory mineral edge that gives the wine real definition. Red berry fruit, citrus peel, spice, and earthy undertones unfold in layers, finishing long and focused. With its balance and structure, the wine has strong aging potential and should develop beautifully over the next decade or more.

Production
Santo Spirito is one of the high-altitude contrada sites on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, where volcanic soils, cool nights, and significant diurnal shifts help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. The vineyard’s old vines and naturally low yields contribute concentration without sacrificing elegance. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified with a gentle approach to preserve the nuance of the fruit and the character of the site. Fermentation is typically carried out with careful temperature control and relatively minimal intervention, followed by élevage in a combination of oak vessels that support the wine without overwhelming its delicate personality. The result is a wine that is clearly shaped by its terroir, with a strong sense of place and exceptional lift.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for dishes that echo its savory, refined character, such as roast poultry, duck, grilled lamb, mushroom risotto, veal, or Sicilian-inspired cuisine with herbs, tomatoes, and eggplant. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and charcuterie. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for about 30–60 minutes to allow the wine’s aromatic layers to open fully.

Producer
Tenuta delle Terre Nere, founded by Marco de Grazia, has played a major role in establishing Etna as one of Italy’s most exciting fine-wine regions. The estate is known for its focus on single-vineyard expressions, old vines, and a style that highlights purity, precision, and the individuality of Etna’s many contrade. Over the years, Terre Nere has earned international acclaim for helping define the modern identity of Etna red wines.
