Description

Terralsole Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 Magnum is a powerful yet finely tuned expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most meticulous, artisan producers. Bottled in the impressive 1.5L format, this wine is built for long life, graceful evolution, and memorable occasions at the table. It captures the soul of the outstanding 2015 vintage, where perfect ripening conditions delivered depth, purity and balance.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Terralsole Brunello shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet highlights just beginning to form at the rim, reflecting both its maturity and its long life ahead. The nose is layered and expressive: wild cherry, dried raspberry and black plum are lifted by notes of violet, rose petal and Mediterranean herbs, with subtle undertones of tobacco leaf, leather, cedar, spice box and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet harmoniously balanced Brunello, with finely etched tannins and a spine of fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. Flavors of sour cherry, red currant and ripe blood orange meld with licorice, savory herbs, forest floor and well-integrated oak nuances of sweet spice, cocoa and a touch of vanilla. The finish is long, tactile and saline, showing both the elegance of the higher-altitude sites and the structure of the warmer, clay-rich slopes. In Magnum format, the 2015 has excellent aging potential: it can be enjoyed now with a proper decant, but will continue to develop tertiary complexity and silkier texture over the next 10–20 years, and quite possibly longer in a good cellar.

Production
Terralsole farms 12 hectares of estate vineyards that beautifully mirror the dual nature of Montalcino’s terroir. The Pian Bossolino parcels, surrounding the winery and Villa Terralsole at about 1,200 feet on the southeast slope, enjoy cooler temperatures and excellent ventilation, allowing for slow, even ripening and wines with lifted aromatics and finesse. Fonte Lattaia, at approximately 750 feet on the southwest side, is rooted in marine deposits and clay, giving richness, structure and a darker fruit profile to the Sangiovese. All grapes are 100% estate-grown, hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before fermentation. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to respect Sangiovese’s natural elegance, followed by extended aging in carefully selected oak to polish the tannins and build complexity, before bottling on the estate. The Magnum format further enhances the wine’s ability to evolve slowly and harmoniously over time.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised lamb shanks, slow-cooked beef cheeks, wild boar ragù, or roasted game birds with herbs and porcini. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle-inflected dishes. Serve at 18 °C (around 64–65 °F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the wine to fully open. Given its youth and structure in Magnum, decanting for 1–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and release the full aromatic spectrum, especially if enjoyed within the next few years.

Producer
Terralsole is a small, family-run estate founded in 1996 by veteran winemaker and artist Mario Bollag and his wife, musician Athena Tergis. Their vision was to merge art, music and viticulture into a coherent expression of place, crafting Brunello that is both soulful and precise. Located in Montalcino, Terralsole has become known for its meticulous vineyard work, its focus on 100% estate-grown Sangiovese and its ability to harmonize two distinct terroirs—cool, breezy high-altitude slopes and warmer, clay-rich, marine-influenced soils—into complex, balanced wines. Over the years, the estate has earned a loyal following among Brunello enthusiasts for its artisanal approach, consistent quality and wines that speak clearly of Montalcino’s diverse landscapes.
