Description

Terralibera’s “Da Solo” Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC Classico Superiore 2022 is a tiny-production white that serious Verdicchio lovers will want to discover. Sourced from a single, windswept parcel and made with a light touch in the cellar, it delivers both precision and depth in the glass. With only about 2,000 bottles produced per year, this is a genuine boutique bottling that captures the character of the Marche hills in a pure, unadorned style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Verdicchio shows a luminous straw-yellow hue with greenish highlights, signaling freshness and youth. The nose is initially restrained and elegant, slowly opening to delicate acacia blossom, followed by notes of white peach, white currant and a lift of pink grapefruit. On the palate, the wine is both textural and vibrant. A gentle, almost creamy extract sweetness is immediately apparent, neatly counterbalanced by a lively, well-integrated acidity. Underneath runs a pronounced salty, chalky minerality that gives structure and length, echoing the vineyard’s calcareous soils. Subtle layers of spice and herbal nuance (think fennel, almond and a touch of white pepper) build with air, adding complexity. Enjoyable now for its energy and clarity, it also has the stuffing to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining more nutty, honeyed and savory notes with bottle age.

Production
“Da Solo” comes from a single 1.38-hectare parcel perched on the highest point of a hillside in the Castelli di Jesi area, facing northwest. This elevated, breezy site with calcareous, mineral-rich soils delivers naturally low yields and excellent diurnal temperature swings, preserving acidity and aromatic finesse. The vineyard is in conversion to organic farming, with close attention paid to soil health and biodiversity. Grapes are picked entirely by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for careful selection in the vineyard. Fermentation is carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, emphasizing the unmasked character of Verdicchio and its terroir. The wine then matures for six months on fine lees in stainless steel, gaining texture and complexity without any oak influence, followed by a further six months of bottle aging before release to harmonize its components.

Food & Serving
This Verdicchio is a natural partner for seafood: think grilled prawns, seared scallops, simply prepared white fish, or linguine alle vongole. It also pairs beautifully with fritto misto, crudo, goat’s cheese, young pecorino, and vegetable-based dishes such as asparagus risotto, artichokes alla romana, or herb-inflected poultry. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight its freshness and mineral edge. A brief 20–30 minutes in the fridge followed by a few minutes in the glass works well; for maximum complexity, you can lightly aerate or decant for about 15 minutes, especially as the wine gains a year or two of bottle age.

Producer
Terralibera is a small, quality-driven estate based in Serra de’ Conti in the Marche, at the heart of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. Working on a modest scale, the winery focuses on expressing its hillside vineyards with minimal intervention and an increasing commitment to organic farming. By championing hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentations and careful, detail-oriented cellar work, Terralibera has positioned itself as part of the new wave of producers showing how refined, terroir-driven and ageworthy Verdicchio can be. Bottlings like “Da Solo” underline the estate’s role in elevating the reputation of Verdicchio from everyday white to one of Italy’s most distinctive and characterful wines.
