Description

Terlano Pinot Bianco Vorberg Riserva 2023 is a benchmark Italian white from the steep, terraced slopes above the village of Terlano in Alto Adige. This single-vineyard Pinot Bianco is celebrated for its remarkable tension between richness and minerality, and for its ability to age far beyond what most white wines can achieve. As one of Cantina Terlano’s flagship bottlings, Vorberg has helped redefine what Pinot Bianco can be on the world stage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Vorberg Riserva shows a luminous straw-yellow color with delicate green reflections, hinting at both freshness and depth. The nose is refined yet expressive, opening with ripe pear, white peach and Golden Delicious apple, layered with notes of chamomile, almond blossom, and a subtle smokiness. As it evolves in the glass, more complex nuances emerge: wet stone, crushed herbs, and a gentle hint of brioche from extended lees aging. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied for a Pinot Bianco, with a concentrated, textural mouthfeel that remains beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity and a pronounced saline minerality. Flavors of orchard fruits, citrus zest and white plum mingle with hints of hazelnut, fresh bread crust and a delicate spice from large oak casks. The finish is long, precise and vertical, driven by a stony backbone that promises excellent development in bottle. While already highly enjoyable in its youth for its purity and energy, the 2023 Vorberg Riserva has the structure to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years or more, gaining complexity, creaminess and nuance over time.

Production
Vorberg comes from steep, south- and southwest-facing vineyards on the Vorberg slope above Terlano, at elevations that can reach 700 meters. Here, the vines grow on porphyry-based, sandy and gravelly soils that are poor in nutrients but rich in minerals, a key source of the wine’s distinctive tension and salinity. The grapes are typically hand-harvested in small crates to preserve perfect bunch condition and to allow a precise selection of only the healthiest, ripest fruit. In the cellar, Cantina Terlano vinifies Vorberg with a gentle pressing, followed by fermentation in large oak barrels, where the wine then ages on the fine lees for an extended period (often around 12 months or more). Regular lees stirring adds texture, creaminess and aromatic complexity, while the use of large, neutral wood preserves the varietal character and the hallmark minerality of Pinot Bianco. The result is a wine that combines alpine freshness with remarkable depth and longevity.

Food & Serving
Terlano Pinot Bianco Vorberg Riserva 2023 is a superb match for refined cuisine and delicate yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted fish, shellfish (especially scallops, langoustines and lobster), alpine cheeses, poultry in cream sauces, veal, and elegant vegetable dishes such as risotto with asparagus, fennel or mushrooms. It also works exceptionally well with refined Italian antipasti, cured trout, or lightly truffled dishes. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both its freshness and complexity. Young bottles benefit from being opened 30–45 minutes in advance, and a short decant can help the wine unfold its layered aromas and texture; more mature bottles should be handled gently and decanted only if sediment is present.
