Description
Teo Costa Vino Rosso Roero DOCG “Di Costa in” 2021 is a characterful Nebbiolo from the rolling hills of Piemonte, crafted to showcase the elegant, more approachable side of this noble grape. Sourced from the Roero DOCG, just across the river from Barolo and Barbaresco, it balances structure and finesse in a distinctly Piedmontese style. This bottling stands out for its combination of fine tannins, vivid fruit and authentic territorial expression, rooted in a region with centuries of winemaking tradition.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Roero “Di Costa in” shows a bright, transparent ruby to garnet hue, typical of Nebbiolo from this cooler, sandy-soiled zone. The nose opens with aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries and dried rose petals, followed by hints of blood orange, licorice, sweet spices and a subtle earthy nuance.
On the palate, this Roero offers medium body with a refined but present tannic structure and lively acidity, giving it both freshness and grip. Flavors of crunchy red berries, sour cherry and pomegranate are layered with notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf and a touch of mineral salinity on the finish. While already enjoyable in its youth for its vibrant fruit and perfume, it has the backbone to develop further complexity over the next 5–8 years, softening its tannins and gaining more tertiary notes of leather and truffle with careful cellaring.
Production
The vineyards for Teo Costa’s Roero DOCG lie on the left bank of the Tanaro River in Piemonte, where sandy, calcareous soils and steep, well-exposed slopes give Nebbiolo a more aromatic and graceful profile than in the neighboring Langhe. The grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, the wine is vinified in the traditional Piedmontese style: a controlled-temperature fermentation with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannins and aromatics, followed by maturation in a combination of stainless steel and traditional vessels (often large oak) to preserve freshness while allowing the tannins to integrate and the bouquet to evolve before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Roero Nebbiolo is a versatile partner for classic Piedmontese dishes and hearty, flavorful cuisine. It pairs beautifully with tajarin pasta with meat ragù, veal brasato, mushroom risottos, roast poultry, lamb chops and aged cow’s milk cheeses such as Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at around 16–18°C (61–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the bouquet to open and the tannins to soften.
