Description

Teo Costa Piemonte Passito Barbera 2022 is a deeply expressive, late-harvest Barbera from the hills of Castellinaldo d’Alba in Piemonte. Crafted in the traditional passito style, it delivers intense concentration, warmth and silkiness while still reflecting the grape’s natural freshness and tension. Presented in a distinctive amphora-style bottle inspired by historic Piedmontese glassware, it bridges centuries of local tradition with a contemporary, eye-catching aesthetic. This limited-production wine stands out for its powerful structure, generous body and remarkable aging potential well beyond 10 years. It draws on Barbera’s ancient and almost sacred roots in the area around the small 15th-century church of San Salvario, where carefully chosen wines once accompanied religious ceremonies. Today, Teo Costa’s Vitidautunno® range brings that heritage into the modern era with innovative packaging and a refined, meditative style of Barbera Passito.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Teo Costa Piemonte Passito Barbera shows a deep, ruby-purple core with attractive orange reflections at the rim, already hinting at its richness and slow evolution. The color is dense and almost opaque, suggesting both concentration and long life ahead. On the nose, it is ethereal and intense, with an impression of great purity and nobility. Expect layers of macerated red and black cherries, dried plum and ripe blackberry, wrapped in notes of sweet spice, dried rose petals, incense and a touch of cocoa and licorice. The bouquet is persistent and refined, opening gradually in the glass and gaining complexity with air. The palate is warm, silky and powerful, yet balanced. The texture is rich and velvety, with flavors that echo ripe and dried grapes: black cherry compote, fig, sultana and wild berries, supported by hints of clove, star anise, dark chocolate and a subtle balsamic note. Barbera’s naturally vibrant acidity keeps the wine alive and prevents the sweetness of the fruit from feeling heavy, while the tannins are firm but polished, providing a confident structure. The finish is long, spicy and persistent, leaving a memory of ripe dark fruit and gentle warmth. With its strong structure and concentrated profile, this Passito Barbera has excellent aging potential. Properly cellared, it will not only withstand more than 10 years of maturation, but is likely to become even more harmonious and complex, developing notes of dried flowers, leather, tobacco and truffle over time.

Production
The grapes for Teo Costa Piemonte Passito Barbera 2022 come from the rolling hills around Castellinaldo d’Alba in Piemonte, an area marked by calcareous-clay soils, good drainage and excellent exposure to sun and wind. This terroir, combined with Barbera’s natural vigor, yields grapes with thick skins, ripe tannins and naturally high acidity—ideal for the passito style. The fruit is carefully harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only healthy, concentrated bunches are used. After picking, the grapes are traditionally dried for a period to concentrate sugars, aromas and phenolic compounds, before being gently pressed. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperatures to preserve aromatic intensity, followed by a period of maturation—often in wood and/or tank—to integrate tannins, stabilize the structure and refine the texture. The result is a wine of remarkable depth, power and balance that fully expresses both the grape and its hillside origin.

Food & Serving
This Passito Barbera is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes and aged cheeses. It pairs beautifully with braised meats such as ossobuco, brasato al Barolo, slow-cooked beef cheeks or game stews, as well as roasted lamb, wild boar ragù and hearty pasta dishes with truffle or mushroom sauces. It can also shine at the end of a meal alongside aged hard cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, mature Castelmagno), blue cheeses and dishes featuring reduced meat jus or balsamic. Serve at 13–15 °C to highlight both its aromatic complexity and velvety texture. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open and reveal its full aromatic depth and silky, layered palate.

Producer
For well over a century, the Costa family has tended the hills around the picturesque village of Castellinaldo d’Alba, in the heart of Piemonte. Teo Costa is deeply rooted in this landscape, with a particular focus on elevating Barbera from Castellinaldo to a status worthy of its history and terroir. Roberto Costa, who leads the estate, serves as president of the local growers’ association “I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo” and has dedicated his career to championing Castellinaldo as a distinctive subzone for Barbera d’Alba DOC. The Vitidautunno® line—of which this Passito Barbera is a part—embodies the winery’s innovative spirit, using colorful labels that recall the multi-hued autumn vineyards and a unique bottle shape inspired by the historic Piedmontese “Poirinetta”, once used by the royal House of Savoy. Over the years, Teo Costa has earned multiple international awards for its concentrated, characterful and terroir-driven Barberas, reinforcing its reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
