Description
Teo Costa “Monroj” Barolo 2020 DOCG is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from the rolling hills of Piemonte, crafted for those who appreciate structure, elegance and depth. This is a Barolo that combines traditional character with a generous, velvety texture, making it approachable in youth yet built to age gracefully. Sourced from carefully tended vineyards and made by a family with over a century of winemaking history, it showcases both the nobility of the grape and the heritage of the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet red hue with the characteristic orange reflections that signal Nebbiolo’s noble evolution. The nose is refined and intense, opening with floral notes of dried rose and violet, followed by red cherry, raspberry and hints of leather, licorice, sweet spices and a subtle balsamic edge. It’s an aroma profile that is both aristocratic and persistent, revealing new layers with time in the glass.
On the palate, this Barolo is very rich and harmonious, with a full, generous and distinctly velvety mouthfeel. Fine but firm tannins frame flavors of ripe red berries, dried plum, tar, tobacco and truffle, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine lifted and precise. The finish is long and persistent, echoing spice and floral notes. Teo Costa suggests this wine typically reaches its best between 5–6 years after the vintage and can maintain its excellent quality for 18–20 years, making the 2020 a strong candidate for both near-term enjoyment and extended cellaring.
Production
The “Monroj” Barolo 2020 comes from the hills of Piemonte, where Nebbiolo thrives on well-exposed slopes with calcareous and clay-limestone soils that contribute both structure and aromatic finesse. The continental climate with warm days and cool nights allows for a slow, complete ripening of Nebbiolo, developing complexity while preserving acidity. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches in the vineyard. In classic Barolo fashion, the must undergoes a long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by extended aging in oak and bottle to polish the powerful structure into the generous, velvety texture that defines “Monroj.”
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes. Think braised meats, ossobuco, slow-cooked beef or lamb shanks, game dishes, truffle risotto, porcini mushrooms and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. It also pairs beautifully with Piemonte classics like tajarin pasta with ragù or brasato al Barolo. Serve at 18–19°C for optimal expression. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the bouquet to open fully and the tannins to soften on the palate.
Producer
For well over a hundred years, the Costa family has cared for the hilly vineyards around the picturesque village of Castellinaldo in Piemonte. Deeply rooted in the land, they have become respected ambassadors of their territory, combining tradition with thoughtful, quality-driven viticulture. Roberto Costa, who leads the estate today, also serves as president of the local winegrowers’ association “I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo,” dedicating his heart and energy to promoting Castellinaldo as a valuable underzone for Barbera d’Alba DOC wines. This commitment to the region’s identity and potential is reflected in the Teo Costa range, including “Monroj” Barolo, which stands as a testament to the family’s experience, regional pride and pursuit of authentic, characterful wines.
