Description
Teo Costa "Monroj" Barolo 2015 in magnum format is a classic expression of Nebbiolo from the rolling hills of Piemonte, crafted for those who appreciate depth, structure and longevity. This 1.5L bottle is ideal for long-term cellaring or sharing at the table, where the wine’s complexity and evolution can truly shine. From an excellent vintage, it brings together traditional Barolo character with the thoughtful touch of a historic family estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange reflections at the rim, a hallmark of well-developing Nebbiolo. The nose is layered and expressive, offering notes of dried roses, violets and tar alongside red cherries, raspberry compote and hints of cedar, leather, tobacco leaf and subtle spice.
On the palate, "Monroj" is structured yet refined, with firm, finely etched tannins and a vibrant acidity that carries the flavors long across the finish. Expect a core of sour cherry and red currant wrapped in notes of licorice, dried herbs and earthy undertones, with a gentle savory bite that adds complexity. From a strong ageing vintage and presented in magnum, this 2015 has many years ahead of it; it is already approachable with air, but will continue to gain nuance and tertiary character—think truffle, forest floor and dried fruits—over the next decade or more.
Production
Sourced from the classic hills of Piemonte, this Barolo reflects the region’s mix of calcareous marl and clay-limestone soils that give Nebbiolo both perfume and backbone. The Costa family’s approach is rooted in attentive vineyard work and careful selection of grapes at harvest to ensure ripe tannins and balanced acidity. Vinification typically follows traditional Barolo methods: extended maceration on the skins to draw out color, tannin and aroma, followed by a slow élevage in large wooden casks and/or older barrels to allow the wine to evolve gradually without overshadowing its delicate aromatics. The result is a Barolo that speaks clearly of its terroir and vintage, with an emphasis on elegance over sheer power.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural match for richly flavored, savory dishes—think braised beef, ossobuco, venison, truffle risotto, porcini mushrooms, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase both its aromatics and structure. Given both its youthfulness in Barolo terms and the magnum format, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its floral, spicy and earthy layers.
Producer
The Costa family has cared for the rolling hills around the picturesque village of Castellinaldo in Piemonte for well over a century, firmly rooting Teo Costa in the traditions of the region. Roberto Costa, a driving force behind the estate, serves as president of the local growers’ association "I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo," dedicating his energy to elevating Castellinaldo’s reputation, particularly as a noteworthy subzone for Barbera d’Alba. While the estate is widely recognized for its commitment to Barbera, Teo Costa also crafts classic Piemontese wines like Barolo, applying the same respect for terroir, careful vineyard management and thoughtful winemaking that have made the family an important reference point in their corner of Piemonte.
