Description
Teo Costa Barbaresco DOCG Lancaia 2022 is a poised and characterful expression of Nebbiolo from the hills around the village of Treiso in Piemonte. Sourced from just under 2 hectares of prime, south-facing vineyards, it marries Barbaresco’s classic power with a striking sense of elegance and purity. Only the very best grapes are selected, resulting in a wine that captures both the intensity and the finesse that have made Barbaresco one of Italy’s most revered appellations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lancaia 2022 shows a luminous garnet hue with brick reflections at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is inviting and layered, opening with ripe cherries and wild strawberries, followed by notes of dried herbs, subtle spice and a gentle hint of forest floor that adds complexity.
On the palate, the wine is firm yet refined, with flavors of juicy red cherries, ripe strawberries and dark plums supported by vibrant acidity and well-defined tannins. The structure is classic Barbaresco: ample but polished, giving both immediate pleasure and the promise of evolution. While already approachable with a proper decant, this vintage has the backbone to develop greater complexity over the next 6–10 years, gaining tertiary notes of leather, dried roses and truffle with time in the cellar.
Production
The Nebbiolo grapes for Lancaia are grown on south-facing slopes around Treiso in the Barbaresco zone, where optimal sun exposure and the rolling, calcareous-clay hills create ideal conditions for slow, even ripening. Yields are kept low and the fruit is carefully selected to ensure only the finest clusters go into this cuvée. After harvest, the grapes undergo a relatively short maceration on the skins in oak, enhancing structure and color while preserving elegance and aromatic freshness. The wine is then aged for 24 months in oak barrels, allowing the tannins to integrate and the bouquet to gain depth, followed by a further 6 months’ refinement in bottle before release, in line with the traditional Barbaresco maturation style.
Food & Serving
Teo Costa Barbaresco DOCG Lancaia 2022 is a natural partner for flavorful meat dishes such as roast lamb, grilled or pan-seared beef, braised veal shanks, and rich stews or ragùs. It also shines alongside game birds, mushroom-based dishes and aged, firm cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to soften and the wine’s floral and earthy nuances to fully emerge.
Producer
For more than a century, the Costa family has tended the rolling hills around the picturesque village of Castellinaldo in Piemonte, building a reputation for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines. Today, Teo Costa is led by Roberto Costa, a key figure in the local wine community and president of the association “I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo,” dedicated to promoting Castellinaldo as a standout subzone for Barbera d’Alba. While Barbera remains a flagship, the estate has also earned recognition for its Nebbiolo-based wines, such as this Barbaresco, which reflect the same commitment to quality, strict adherence to regional regulations and respect for tradition. Over the years, Teo Costa has garnered multiple international awards, underscoring its status as a benchmark producer in the region.
