Description
Teo Costa Barbera d'Alba Castellinald 2020 is a vibrant, characterful red from the heart of Piemonte, crafted to showcase Barbera at its most pure and expressive. This vintage balances juicy fruit with lively acidity, making it both immediately enjoyable and food‑friendly. Hailing from the hills around Alba, it taps into the long tradition of Barbera as the everyday wine of Piemonte, elevated here with careful vineyard work and thoughtful winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barbera d'Alba shows a deep ruby-red core with violet highlights, youthful and vivid at the rim. The nose opens with ripe red cherry, blackberry and plum, layered with hints of violets, dried herbs, and a subtle touch of sweet spice and licorice.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet intense, driven by Barbera’s hallmark bright acidity. Juicy red and black fruits are supported by fine, supple tannins and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish. Notes of sour cherry, blackcurrant and a gentle savory edge keep the wine precise and energetic. While it’s crafted for enjoyment in its youth, the 2020 has enough structure and acidity to age gracefully for another 3–5 years, gaining complexity and softer contours with time.
Production
The Barbera grapes for Castellinald 2020 are sourced from hillside vineyards in Piemonte’s Barbera d'Alba appellation, where calcareous clay and marl soils, combined with good elevation and exposure, deliver both ripeness and freshness. The vines benefit from warm days and cool nights, helping to preserve aromatic intensity and natural acidity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to allow for careful selection in the vineyard. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to capture Barbera’s pure fruit character, followed by maturation in a mix of stainless steel and traditional vessels (often large neutral oak), aimed at rounding the texture without masking the grape’s vibrant profile.
Food & Serving
This Barbera d'Alba is a natural partner for classic Italian cuisine: think tomato-based pastas, pizzas, grilled sausages, mushroom risotto, roast chicken, charcuterie and semi-hard cheeses like Fontina or Asiago. Its bright acidity cuts through richer dishes, while the juicy fruit complements both rustic and more refined plates. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromatics open up, but it can also be enjoyed straight from the bottle for a more immediate, fruit‑forward experience.
