Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Primitivo shows a deep ruby-red colour with purple highlights at the rim, hinting at its youthful energy and concentration. The nose is immediately inviting, with layers of ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, interwoven with notes of sweet spices, licorice, cocoa and a subtle hint of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, Punta Aquila 2021 is full-bodied and velvety, with plush dark fruit at the core and well-integrated tannins that give shape without harshness. Flavours of black cherry compote, blueberry and dried fig are lifted by notes of vanilla, clove and a touch of mocha from careful oak aging. A juicy acidity keeps the wine vibrant, leading to a long, warm finish with lingering spice and a touch of balsamic complexity. Enjoyable now for its generous fruit, it has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 5–7 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Punta Aquila is sourced from estate vineyards in Apulia, where Primitivo thrives in warm Mediterranean conditions tempered by sea breezes from the Adriatic. The vines grow on well-drained, calcareous and clay-rich soils that naturally limit yields and intensify flavour. Grapes are generally harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit integrity and allow careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, a controlled fermentation on the skins extracts colour, aroma and supple tannins, followed by maturation in oak (often a mix of barriques and larger barrels) to add complexity and polish without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit.

This is a versatile food wine that shines alongside hearty Mediterranean dishes. Pair it with grilled or roasted red meats, slow-cooked lamb, hearty ragùs, spicy sausage, pizza with robust toppings, or aged cheeses like pecorino and parmigiano. It also works beautifully with rich tomato-based pasta and oven-baked lasagne. Serve at 16–18°C; if the wine is young and just opened, a short decant of 30–45 minutes will help it open up and reveal its full aromatic profile.
