Description

Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2022 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Verduno’s most celebrated crus. It combines the structure and longevity expected of Barolo with an aromatic, elegant character, reflecting the distinctive terroir of Monvigliero. Founded in 1921, Paolo Scavino is one of the historic names of the Barolo region.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby-red colour with developing garnet hues. Its aromatic profile is intense and multifaceted, offering layers of ripe red fruit, floral nuances and subtle earthy complexity. On the palate, the opening is soft and rounded, supported by a precise balance between fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. Underlying depth emerges as the wine develops, leading to a long, nuanced finish with excellent persistence. The 2022 vintage is already approachable with air, but its structure and balance suggest very good ageing potential over the next 10–15 years, provided it is stored in suitable conditions.

Production
Produced from Nebbiolo grown in the Monvigliero cru in Verduno, within the Barolo DOCG area, the wine reflects the site’s capacity to produce aromatic and finely structured expressions of the variety. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing skin maceration for approximately 10–12 days and alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Natural fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre barrels. The wine matures for 10 months in French oak, followed by a further 12 months in large casks, then spends 10 months in stainless-steel tanks and an additional 10 months in bottle before release.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C in a large Burgundy or Nebbiolo glass to allow the aromas to unfold. Decanting for approximately 1–2 hours is recommended when serving the wine young; older bottles may benefit from careful decanting to remove sediment. Its balance of fruit, acidity and tannin makes it an excellent match for braised beef, game, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms, aged hard cheeses and traditional Piedmontese cuisine such as tajarin with ragù.

Producer
Tenuta Paolo Scavino was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto and remains a family-owned estate led by Enrico Scavino together with his daughters, Enrica and Elisa. The family owns approximately 29 hectares and also works with around 20 historic Barolo vineyards across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. With more than six decades of experience investing in distinguished Nebbiolo crus, the estate has built a strong reputation for wines that express the character of each individual site while combining traditional identity with precise, modern winemaking.
