Description
Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2021 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most celebrated appellations. It combines the grape’s characteristic structure and longevity with a polished, elegant style, reflecting the Scavino family’s long-standing commitment to showcasing the individual character of Barolo’s historic vineyards. Founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1921, the estate is now recognised as one of the region’s important traditional yet forward-thinking producers.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep ruby-red colour with the beginnings of garnet at the rim. Its aromatic profile is intense and layered, revealing ripe red berries, rose, violet and subtle spice, with earthy and balsamic nuances emerging as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, the attack is soft and rounded, supported by a fine balance between fresh acidity and polished tannins. Beneath its expressive fruit lies notable depth and complexity, while the finish is long, persistent and finely nuanced. The 2021 vintage has the structure to develop beautifully in bottle over the next decade or more, while careful decanting will make it approachable in its youth.
Production
Produced from Nebbiolo in the Barolo area of Piedmont, this wine reflects the region’s classic combination of calcareous soils, hillside vineyards and a continental climate with significant day-night temperature variation. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing skin maceration for approximately 10–12 days and alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Natural fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre barrels. The wine is matured for 10 months in French oak, followed by 12 months in large casks, then blended and rested for a further 10 months in stainless steel and 10 months in bottle.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when enjoying the wine young, particularly to soften its tannins and reveal its aromatic depth; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all. Its structure and savoury character make it an excellent partner for braised beef, wild boar, lamb, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms, aged cheeses and classic Piedmontese specialities such as tajarin with ragù.
Producer
Tenuta Paolo Scavino was established in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto and remains a family-run estate, today led by Enrico Scavino with his daughters Enrica and Elisa. The family owns approximately 29 hectares of vineyards and also works with around 20 historic Barolo sites across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. With more than six decades of experience investing in distinguished Nebbiolo vineyards, Scavino combines modern cellar techniques with a strong respect for terroir, producing Barolo wines known for their individuality, complexity and elegance.
