Description

Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2018 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most distinguished historic estates. Hailing from the renowned Monvigliero cru in Verduno, it combines Barolo’s characteristic structure and longevity with an elegant, aromatic profile. Paolo Scavino was founded in 1921 and remains one of the region’s benchmark producers.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a luminous garnet-red colour with the brick-red nuances that develop naturally in Nebbiolo. Its aromatic spectrum is intense and layered, revealing ripe red berries, rose petals, violet, spices and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, the opening is soft and rounded, supported by a fine balance between fresh acidity and polished tannins. Beneath the graceful fruit lies notable depth, while the finish is long, detailed and nuanced. The 2018 vintage offers both approachability and the structure needed for further development. With careful cellaring, this Barolo should gain additional complexity over the next decade or more, evolving towards dried flowers, forest floor, leather and savoury spice.

Production
Made from Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo area, Monvigliero is known for its expressive, elegant character and distinctive Piedmontese terroir. At Paolo Scavino, the grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing maceration with the skins for approximately 10–12 days and alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Natural fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre oak barrels. The wine is matured for 10 months in French oak, followed by 12 months in large casks, then blended and rested in stainless-steel tanks before spending a further 10 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C, preferably after allowing the wine to warm gently in the glass. Decanting for approximately one to two hours is recommended when enjoying the wine in its youth, both to open its aromatic layers and to soften its tannins. Its structure and depth make it an excellent partner for truffle dishes, braised beef, game, osso buco, rich mushroom preparations and mature cheeses.

Producer
Founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Tenuta Paolo Scavino is one of the historic names of the Barolo region. Today, the family estate is led by Enrico Scavino together with his daughters Enrica and Elisa. The family owns approximately 29 hectares of vineyards and works with a further 20 historic Barolo crus across areas including Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. Combining decades of experience with modern winemaking techniques, the estate is recognised for producing precise, terroir-driven Barolo wines marked by complexity, character and elegance.
