Description
Tenuta Paolo Scavino’s Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 2017 is a refined expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most celebrated appellations. Combining fragrant fruit, polished structure and impressive depth, it reflects the historic estate’s longstanding commitment to revealing the individual character of its Barolo vineyards. Founded in 1921, Paolo Scavino is one of the established names of the Barolo region.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep ruby-red colour with the garnet nuances that develop naturally in mature Nebbiolo. Its aromatic profile is intense and varied, offering layers of ripe red fruit, floral notes and subtle spice, with an underlying sense of depth and complexity.
On the palate, the opening is soft and rounded, supported by a fine balance between fresh acidity and well-integrated tannins. The wine is both powerful and elegant, with a nuanced, persistent finish. While approachable with decanting, the 2017 vintage has the structure to develop further over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under suitable cellar conditions.
Production
Bricco Ambrogio is produced from Nebbiolo grown in the Barolo area of Piedmont, where the region’s distinctive terroir helps shape the grape’s characteristic perfume, acidity and tannic structure. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing skin maceration for approximately 10–12 days and natural alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 225-litre barrels during the winter. The wine is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, followed by 12 months in large casks, then blended and refined for a further 10 months in stainless steel and 10 months in bottle.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for Piedmontese cuisine, including braised beef, veal, game and truffle-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, richly flavoured pasta, mature hard cheeses and slow-cooked meats. Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow its aromatic complexity to unfold.
Producer
Tenuta Paolo Scavino was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto and remains a family-run estate led by Enrico Scavino and his daughters, Enrica and Elisa. The family owns 29 hectares of vineyards and works with a further 20 historic Barolo sites across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. With decades of experience investing in outstanding cru vineyards, the estate combines traditional respect for terroir with carefully chosen modern techniques, producing Barolo wines recognised for their individuality, complexity and elegance.
