Description
Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2020 is a distinguished single-vineyard Barolo from Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont, crafted from Nebbiolo with remarkable depth and precision. One of the early Barolos to be bottled as a single-vineyard expression, Bric del Fiasc has become a defining wine of the Scavino estate—combining powerful structure with the elegance and individuality of its terroir.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet nuances that will become more pronounced with age. Its complex nose opens gradually to reveal small red berries, mineral notes, earthy undertones and refined balsamic aromas, followed by hints of liquorice and spice.
On the palate, vibrant acidity supports a firm, finely grained tannic structure. Red fruit and liquorice are characteristic of Bric del Fiasc, while earthy and mineral tones add depth and length. This is a classic, age-worthy Nebbiolo that will gain further complexity over the next 15–25 years, with careful cellaring.
Production
Bric del Fiasc reflects the distinctive terroir of Castiglione Falletto, one of Barolo’s most respected communes. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing skin maceration for approximately 10–12 days and alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Natural fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre barrels. The wine is aged for 10 months in French oak, followed by 12 months in large casks, 10 months of blending in stainless steel and a further 10 months in bottle before release. Natural tartaric stabilisation takes place during the third winter of maturation.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to breathe in a decanter for 1–2 hours, particularly in its youth. Its structure and savoury complexity make it an excellent partner for braised beef, veal, game, truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto and mature hard cheeses. Older bottles may benefit from gentle decanting to separate the sediment, while preserving their delicate aromas.
Producer
Founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Tenuta Paolo Scavino is one of the historic names of the Barolo region. Today, the family estate is led by Enrico Scavino and his daughters, Enrica and Elisa. The family owns approximately 29 hectares of vineyards and also cultivates historic sites across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. With a focus on expressing the character of each cru, Scavino combines long-standing experience with modern winemaking techniques to produce Barolos known for their purity, complexity, power and elegance.
