Tenuta Paolo Scavino, Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2018

Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2018 is one of the estate’s defining wines and an early example of a Barolo made from a single vineyard. Crafted from Nebbiolo in the prestigious hills of Castiglione Falletto, it combines the appellation’s hallmark structure and longevity with remarkable aromatic finesse, making it a compelling expression of both the cru and the Scavino style.

Tasting Notes
The wine has a deep ruby-red colour with garnet reflections that will become more pronounced with age. Its complex nose opens gradually to reveal red berries, violets, liquorice and earthy nuances, complemented by mineral, balsamic and subtly spicy notes. On the palate, vibrant acidity gives energy to the wine’s pronounced structure, while lively, refined tannins provide depth and length. Small red fruits and liquorice are especially characteristic, with an elegant mineral finish and layers that will continue to develop over many years. With careful cellaring, the 2018 vintage should gain further complexity and harmony.

Production
Bric del Fiasc comes from the Barolo area of Piedmont, where Nebbiolo thrives in mineral-rich hillside soils and a cool, continental climate. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing skin maceration for approximately 10–12 days and alcoholic fermentation for around 20–30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Natural fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre French oak barrels. The wine is matured for 10 months in French oak, followed by a further 12 months in large casks, then blended and rested in stainless steel for 10 months before spending an additional 10 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
Its firm tannins, bright acidity and earthy complexity make this Barolo an excellent match for rich and savoury dishes such as braised beef, wild boar, lamb, truffle-based pasta, risotto with mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking the wine young to allow its aromas to unfold; older bottles may benefit from gentle decanting to remove sediment, but should not be left exposed to air for too long.

Founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto, Tenuta Paolo Scavino is one of the historic estates of the Barolo region. Today, the family business is led by Enrico Scavino together with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, continuing a tradition built on independence, precision and respect for individual terroirs. The family owns approximately 29 hectares of vineyards and also works with historic sites across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. The estate is recognised for combining modern winemaking techniques with a deep understanding of Nebbiolo, producing powerful yet refined Barolos with a clear sense of place.
