Description

Tenuta Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2017 is one of Piedmont’s pioneering single-vineyard Barolos, first produced as a cru wine in the 1970s. Crafted from Nebbiolo, it expresses the identity of the Scavino estate through a compelling combination of power, mineral freshness and refined structure. This is a distinguished Barolo with the depth to reward patience and further bottle ageing.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour with garnet reflections that will become more pronounced with age. The nose is complex and layered, combining red berries and cherries with earthy nuances, minerals, balsamic notes and a subtle hint of liquorice. On the palate, vibrant acidity supports a firm, concentrated structure, while lively, refined tannins provide length and grip. Small red fruits, liquorice and savoury earth tones return on the finish, creating a classic and highly expressive Bric del Fiasc profile. The 2017 vintage is approachable with decanting, but this Barolo has considerable ageing potential. It should develop greater aromatic complexity and softer, more integrated tannins over the next 10–20 years when stored in suitable cellar conditions.

Production
Bric del Fiasc comes from the historic Barolo area of Piedmont, where Nebbiolo benefits from a combination of calcareous soils, hillside exposure and a continental climate with marked diurnal temperature variation. The grapes are destemmed and crushed before maceration with the skins for approximately 10–12 days, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks over around 20–30 days. Natural malolactic fermentation takes place in 225-litre casks. The wine is aged for 10 months in French oak, followed by 12 months in large casks, then assembled and matured for a further 10 months in stainless steel and 10 months in bottle. Natural tartaric stabilisation takes place during the third winter of maturation.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 18°C. Decant for one to two hours when enjoying the wine young, particularly to soften its tannins and reveal its balsamic and mineral complexity; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, if at all. Its structure and savoury character make it an excellent match for braised beef, wild boar, veal cheek, truffle dishes, porcini mushrooms and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1921, Tenuta Paolo Scavino is one of the historic names of the Barolo region. Today, the family estate is led by Enrico Scavino together with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, combining deep-rooted independence with carefully applied modern techniques. The family owns around 29 hectares of vineyards and cultivates a further 20 historic Barolo sites across Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, Novello, Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Roddi. With decades of experience in selecting outstanding Nebbiolo crus, Paolo Scavino is recognised for producing wines that express the individuality of each terroir with power, complexity and elegance.
